it is very possible to write a song in your head. Write 4 bars here, 4 there, etc. What Jay said he was doing back in the day seems reasonable on the block. But deep down, do you really believe someone is crafting a full song in their head in an hour or 2, and spitting it in one take with no mistakes? I'm 100% possible everyone here if given the time can write a song in their head through repetition, but not creating 48 bars from scratch in 2 hours and spitting it in one take. They write in their Head a few bars at a time , they memorize 4 bars then write another 4 until they have a whole 16 memorized. They also write verses on paper and memorize them,then use lines from those in the studio. These new rappers can't even freestyle 2 bars at a time, and it's not even a freestyle because they are spending time between takes and it's still hot garbage. The whole writing or just thinking about what you're gonna say first being lame has ruined hip-hop

When Jay says he one takes his verse, he's not saying he gets a perfect take in one try. He means he raps the whole 16 in one take, he doesn't punch in 4 bars at a time,but it might take him multiple tries to get a perfect take.
