So...What's the Main Argument Against Reparations, Again?

Should descendants of African slaves receive reparations?

According to the 2010 census, there are 37,144,530 non-hispanic blacks in the US.

I think $100 grand is unrealistic, but $10 grand would be reasonable. Most of it would go right back into the economy anyways. :kanyebp:

37,144,530 x $10,000 = 371.4 billion. It'd be a stretch, but don't let America tell you it's not feasible--we've spent a combined $2.4 trillion on the Iraq War alone as of this year. :damnshakebp:

But is 10 grand really what we are looking for? How much impact would that really have?

Now if that same amount was put into HBCU's, black owned businesses, infrastructure, vocational schools, housing and apartments, etc. then it would probably be more useful. If we allocated 100-200B every year specifically to these type programs then I think that would serve as the best resolution.

But all of us getting a 10K check is probably not going to do much for the community. But I guess it would serve the purpose of compensation.

Also, not all black people in the US would be entitled to those reparations, just descendants of slaves here. Although that would get messy if checks are handed out.

Depends on what type of reparations we are talking about.

Pure Cash - If the government gave descendants of slaves enough money to make a change in their lives ($100K or better), it would bankrupt the government.

Investments/Schools/Infrastructure/Jobs - Makes sense but the government would argue that they are doing that anyways

It ain't gonna happen either way tho. anybody that thinks it's even a possibility thinks too highly of white people.

basically this is it.

Racists ran out out the clock on reparations... they gave slave owners reparations but not slaves... should've given us our own land.

Like you said, affirmative action / FAFSA is probably the only "compromise" people will accept... but even now.... Asians and Whites hate the fact blacks get in w/ easier standards. Look at the controversy medical school acceptance rates between races.

Lol people thinking reparations should be a monetary payment is lost.

Reparations would be policy that give descendants of slaves privileges over every other American.

Things like free college education, free home ownership, governmental agencies that solely focus on improving the lives of descendants, land grants, hospitals, schools, full employment...

You receiving a check in the mail won't do shyt.

The Freedman's Bureau of the Reconstruction era was the closest thing we got to reparations and we should model that.

Reparations is about correcting generatonal wrongs and removing African Americans from the status of permanent underclass.

It's not so we can get checks in the mail.

It's so Black privilege can be an actual thing.

You're opening up a can of worms. Also its a case by case basis for many. Then you have the people who would try to take advantage, so we're looking at a vetting process. Could it be done? Yeah, but it wouldn't make much sense.

Then there's the pink elephant in the room...there is no single group clearly responsible for all of slavery.

No one group benefited exclusively from it.

Only a tiny minority of whites were slave owners...makes sense as owning slaves meant you had to have money to feed, cloth and house them. One in every 5 white person was a slave owner. The son should not pay for the father in this context. Plus we're 4 generations removed from the Civil War.

America Today Is A Multi-Ethnic Nation and Most Americans Have No Connection (Direct Or Indirect) To Slavery. A hard pill to swallow for a lot of people, but statistically true.

Then there's the whole separatist school of thought...just too much to dive into without writing an essay.

If Bernie Sanders wanted to really win the Black vote then he should have said reparations like this when he was asked about it. BOOM.

So none of the owners of these multi million and billion dollar corporation's have any direct or indirect responsibilities for slavery, even when they literally built their company and wealth off slaves?

:gucci:

1 in 5 white men being slave owners is a high ass number of slave owners.

Kids pay for their parents fukk ups all the time, but since white people kicked the can generations down the line, it shouldn't be up for debate?

According to the National Archives and Records Administration, The District of Columbia Emancipation Act paved the way to compensate slave owners for their “loyalty to the Union” and for the loss of income incurred by freeing slaves.

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia. Passage of this law came 8 1/2 months before President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation.

The act brought to a conclusion decades of agitation aimed at ending what antislavery advocates called “the national shame” of slavery in the nation’s capital. It provided for immediate emancipation, compensation to former owners who were loyal to the Union of up to $300 for each freed slave, voluntary colonization of former slaves to locations outside the United States, and payments of up to $100 for each person choosing emigration.

Over the next 9 months, the Board of Commissioners appointed to administer the act approved 930 petitions, completely or in part, from former owners for the freedom of 2,989 former slaves.
