This was inspired by the NBA/NFL playoffs thread where, once again, many say that the NFL playoffs is usually rewarding the "hot" team, not necessarily the best team.

Is it true that the Super Bowl champion is usually just the hot team and not the best team that year?

When I really think about it, I struggle to find a champion that is not deserving of being called the best team that year. First team that comes to mind is the '98 Vikings, but I can't take anything away from the Broncos that year: similar record and a stronger running game. 2007 Pats? Unbelievable team, but a bad matchup with the Giants.

** What NFL champions were just the hottest and not the best ??

Off the top of my head is SBXXV, where the Bills all but had that game over a Simms-less Giants squad. I think another one was SB XVIII (Raiders over 'skins). I'm sure there were others like SBIII (Jets over Colts). If they did a 5-7 game series like the NBA/MLB/NHL, it's a good chance those and other teams would've won, but...

1-and-done squads...:umad:

The Giants went 14-2 that season.

Now the 1983 Washington Redskins :wow:

The undefeated Patriots were clearly the better team the year the Giants beat them.

yeah of course SB III would be up there.. that's probably the easiest one to pick.

I don't know about the Bills though.. That Giants squad was real tough and Hostetler was a very good QB.

2001 pats. Tuck rules vs raiders than muggin the rams receivers, taping opponents.

The rams were better, they just got cheated

:what:

How were the Pats "clearly" better when the Giants played them to 38-35 in week 17 ?

Of course their offense was legendary, but they didn't match up well with the Giants.

Not to mention the giants beat them twice more, making 3 in a row against the better team

most of the time superbowl champs isnt the team that was best over the season :manny:

but if you go from wild card to winning the bowl, thats 4 games right there...thats a quarter of the season. 16 games is pretty small sample size in general.

like the ravens last year had a bad streak, lost 4 out of 5 to end the year and finished 10-6....were they the best team over reg season ? of course not.

:stopitslime: You can't be this obtuse.. I can easily just list every team that had the best record every season that didn't win the SB

don't fukk up the thread with stupidity

sounds like youre the one whos confused here. when you talk about being the best team, the fukk do you mean if you disregard record ?

the 07 pats team was clearly better in the regular season than the giants team that barely made the offs as a wild card.
