Somali minister of Agriculture Abdi Ahmed Baafo addressing the media

The Federal government of Somalia has called for an emergency international live-saving campaign to protect hundreds of thousands of people from starvation.

Somali minister of agriculture Abdi Ahmed Baafo who talked to reporters at the Prime minister’s office in Mogadishu on Tuesday said that his government was trying its best to deliver food aid and clean drinking water to thousands of families who live in several south-central Somali regions.

“I urge the international aid organizations and as well as Somali business people to urgently reach out to the vulnerable people who are on the verge of starvation— we are afraid that thousands may die in the next few weeks” the minister warned.

“There is no need to talk, this is the time to take an action to protect those people—Somali government has no assets, but we want that the international aid organizations come and spend what the world has allocated for Somalia” the minister expressed.

He said that there was an increasing humanitarian crisis in several regions, but the worst-hit areas are: Gedo, Bakool, Hiiraan and Galgaduud, followed by, Middle Shabelle, Bay and Lower Shabelle as the second worst-hit.

“Next week we are going to deliver hundreds of tanks of drinking water to people in Hiiraan and Galgaduud while other regions will follow---as a government we will do our utmost” the minister noted adding that the world must prevent from the return of what happened in 2011 when Somalia experienced the worst famine in more than 10 years.

This is Southern Somalia

How is it possible to have a famine every couple years?

2011 was an embarrassment but we Somalis just keep going to new lows.

Another 250,000 will die for no other reason than corrupt government, Al Shabaab and no unity.

Ogaden? :ld:

We'd need a new capitol made from scratch so nobody gets their feelings hurt that's all I know. :sas2:

I think more about the possibilities. Rebuild and upgrade the old capitals, fix the ancient ruins, clean the beaches, and boost the wildlife numbers back up for them tourist dollars, collective agriculture so it's a combined breadbasket to combat regional famine and food insecurity, rebuilt and modernized ports for non-stop shipping in the busiest and most important waterway in the world. nikka it's so much we could do united as one, brehs can't handle these initiatives solo, I'm tired of seeing our people being refugees in other broke ass countries or starving and suffering back home. :beli:

The famine is in the most fertile regions of the country. There are a few reasons for this:

- Al Shabab have been pushed out of the major cities and are now concentrated in the countryside fukking with farmers.

- Aid has destroyed Somalia's agricultural sector. The place is flooded with UN food so locals are not buying as much when they can get it for free...local farmers have no incentive to farm. In fact some of them stopped farming altogether since they were making losses.

- War which destroyed the infrastructure and the following chaos and anarchy over the next two decades have contributed to a very low agricultural output. E.g Farmers still use pre-Siad Barre era equipment because of lack of investment. No banks > no loans > no investment

There is no reason why Southern Somalia (most fertile region) should have a famine.

I figured Ogaden would be cool cuz it's been so neglected plus its hardly developed so it'd be ideal for a major world class city. Brehs could do some irrigation projects within Ethiopia to get the water right on that side, bring the whole region in to build together, hell even cacs would have to give props cuz it'd be an answer to the influx of immigrants.

Those 3 things you named are a big ass obstacle tho, not to mention regional politics from places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. If we was at least united we'd have military solidarity to take out the extremists and maybe re-educate the people on that tribal shyt cuz its bad all over. shyt is really idealistic right now tho cuz there may not be the political will to make such a bold move. The EAC even existing right now is real promising tho, brehs gotta fix these colonial beefs between us tho.
