The famine is in the most fertile regions of the country. There are a few reasons for this:

- Al Shabab have been pushed out of the major cities and are now concentrated in the countryside fukking with farmers.

- Aid has destroyed Somalia's agricultural sector. The place is flooded with UN food so locals are not buying as much when they can get it for free...local farmers have no incentive to farm. In fact some of them stopped farming altogether since they were making losses.

- War which destroyed the infrastructure and the following chaos and anarchy over the next two decades have contributed to a very low agricultural output. E.g Farmers still use pre-Siad Barre era equipment because of lack of investment. No banks > no loans > no investment

There is no reason why Southern Somalia (most fertile region) should have a famine.

Solid points... its amazing how some investment would defeat this issue once and for all.

Southern Somalia would feed every single Somali in the peninsula

You would have to think that an East African Federation capital would be in Tanzania, since they are the most Pan African, or Kenya, since they are the most modern.

Maybe they should make that call to the Arab League :mjpls:

but on a serious note, how are they experiencing famine with plenty of farmland?

@Bricktop made some solid points about it on the last page

Farming has to be instilled into nomadic Somalis who are goat/camel herders by trade

The Somali Bantu were the main farmers in the Siad Barre era

shyt like this only makes me believe in a united East African nation even more. It's the only long term answer, we're no good on our own we better as a team. :wow:
This is not happening ever.

For so many reasons

You will find very little sympathy for Somalians in Kenya right now.

....and vice versa. :patrice:

Believe me, I know the shyt I'm saying has a huge set of challenges. Honestly, only the diaspora could broker some shyt like this and even then it risks us being alienated from the people of the homeland cuz they might take that as interference from a place of privilege. But when you learn enough of the history of Africa and our particular region, it just smacks you in the face as the only real long term answer. It'd take quite a strong political movement, the only good thing is there's no shortage of people wanting change in East Africa.

The EAC's projected capitol is in Arusha, Tanzania since it's in the middle of the member states. My consideration of the Ogaden region is only cuz if you added the Horn and the Sudan then Ogaden would be near the middle of the combined region plus its been host to many famines and disenfranchisement. My ideas for East Africa are a lot more ambitious than the EAC cuz of the potential gained from the combined resources. But I see your point, the history of Tanzania under Julius Nyerere in particular would make it an ideal candidate.

Somali Bantu? :wtf:

Nikkaz really can't farm at all cuz they nomads? I don't get it...

Somali Bantus are originally from Tanzania/Mozambique, one of the few minority groups. They historically did farming because they populate Southern Somalia so they know more about the terrain. Siad Barre also implemented integration policies that got them to work as blacksmiths, carpenters, etc in Mogadishu. They're very hard workers.

And yeah, Somalis are arrogant people. They don't farm and never have farmed. It sounds stupid but it's true historically. I feel like ethnic Somalis came to the south with their herds and that's all they did. Very few ethnic Somalis were farmers pre-civil war.

Fishing was even seen as something they would make fun of other Somali clans of doing :snoop: and we have the longest coastline in Africa for God sake

My clan is from the Hiiraan region and my family has some farms. They've been in conflict with Shabab for land and Shabab occupies some of our land.
