Sony's Xperia Z2 introduces a brilliant new display to the company's flagship phone

Launching in March with a bigger battery and screen, more RAM, and new 4K video recording

Sony hasn't seen fit to alter the design or size of its flagship Android phone for 2014, with the newly announced Xperia Z2 occupying the same footprint as last year's Z1, and has instead focused on making notable upgrades on the inside. First and foremost, the company has moved to a new IPS display with what it calls Live Color LEDs, a technology unique to Sony that's claimed to give its mobile devices the widest color gamut on the market — bettering even Apple's excellent iPhone and iPad displays.

When viewed in person, the Z2 does indeed have a very attractive display, with good contrast and color fidelity, immediately distinguishing it from the mediocre screen of the Z1. At 5.2 inches, the Xperia Z2 also gives you slightly more real estate, though the resolution remains unchanged at 1920 x 1080. The battery, RAM, and processor have all been upgraded as well: the new flagship comes with 3200mAh of power, 3GB of memory, and a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801. Aside from a new set of stereo speakers, the external look of the Xperia Z2 is pretty much unchanged, including an all-glass front and back, IP58-certified waterproofing, and a dedicated camera key.

In keeping with the current trend for 4K video recording in smartphones, the Xperia Z2 joins the fray with a new SteadyShot feature borrowed from the company's Handycam line. It's software-based image stabilization that promises to reduce the jitter and imperfections that result from unsteady handheld video. Sony's demonstrations show it's effective at its task, though the end result can sometimes appear unnatural — mechanical image stabilization of the sort you'll find in the Lumia 1020 or LG's G2 is always preferable. Sony's also adding a Timeshift video feature that lets you shoot 720p video at 120fps and then slow it down for a very attractive slow-motion effect.

The Xperia Z2 will be available globally from March with Android 4.4 on board, in the familiar choice of black, white, or purple.

Sony goes for extreme thinness with new Xperia Z2 Tablet
By Vlad Savovon February 24, 2014 02:45 am

Measuring a mere 6.4mm thick, Sony's new 10-inch tablet immediately grabs attention with its aggressively minimal design. All potential excess has been filed away from the Xperia Z2 Tablet, leaving a device that's lighter than the slimmed-down iPad Air while also touting extra features that Apple's slate can't match. First among them is the Live Color LED display, which Sony claims has the widest color gamut of any mobile device and is shared with the newly announced Xperia Z2 smartphone. Also common between the new Xperia devices is the quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and Full HD resolution.

Faithful to its name, the Xperia Z2 Tablet feels very much liked a scaled-up Z2, although it does make one compromise in using an 8-megapixel camera instead of the 20.7-megapixel sensor found inside Sony's flagship smartphone. Even so, both of Sony's devices are fully specced up to the task of satisfying your entertainment needs, and their new displays represent an enormous leap forward for Sony. They easily outdo their predecessors, though it's hard to distinguish a real advantage for them when compared against other strong displays like LG's on the G Pad 8.3.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is also waterproof (rated to IP55 and IP58 standards), moves the speakers to the front with a new S-Force Surround Sound setup, and adds digital noise canceling for a special headset that will be included in the box. Overall, it feels like a great, almost unfeasible, evolution to the Tablet Z it succeeds. A device that was already known for being thin and light has improved on both counts without sacrificing anything — even the 6,000mAh battery has been retained.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet will be available globally from March with Android 4.4 on board.

Oh man, Samsung really beat the S5 with the ugly stick this time. Holy shyt that's bad.

Close to confirmation that the Z2 will be available on multiple US carriers with a "competitive timeframe", whatever that means. The original rumour was VZW, T-Mob and possibly Sprint. AT&T have so far declined. I feel they will change their minds come May.

In Europe, Asia and Canada the Z2 will begin rolling out in the second and third weeks of March. Full availability across all carriers in these places.

Also, now that the Vaio division is closed, more marketing money has been made available. Close to triple what they had for 2013 is being made available for 2014. It's going to be a wild ride guys. 2014 could be the year Xperia breaks out. The line up is there and the early buzz for the Z2 is insanely positive.

Finally, you guys need to see this screen in person. Nothing else even comes close. It is without a doubt the best mobile display currently in production, and the Z2 Tablet screen is also the best tablet screen I have ever seen. Even better than the Air.

Z2 white papers say that it supports ATT's LTE bands (4,17)...is that true?
zomgbbqftw said:
Yes. There is no longer going to be a US specific version. Sony have merged the 03 and 06 variants into a single device.
zomgbbqftw said:
woot woot!

Why was this so hard to do before? Chip limitations?
zomgbbqftw said:
Nah, just Sony being cheap and buying a lesser version of the SoC from Qualcomm. It saved them like $7 per device iirc. However, with their plan to roll out in the US this year looking quite aggressive I think they have changed so they can ship one device globally and unify their US and RoW supply chain, the long term saving is there.

Wish the Z2 would come to Verizon, but we all know it won't.

I trusted you when you said the c6906 will have you a newer panels...but that didn't seem true...

But I will still trust you and hoping you're right this time..

You need to guide us on what model to get that will work with Att Lte...if we want to import an unlock version.
zomgbbqftw said:
There were four Z1 panels with three types, VA, IPS and PLS. I had only seen one prototype which happened to have the best one (PLS) when I broke that piece of info. :(

This time, I have been assured that there is only one panel type, IPS, better still there is only one LTE variant which will work globally, D6503. Very easy this time around. In all likelihood the LTE Z2 will be available unlocked in the US at some point, you won't need to import.

zomg, do you have any info on whether the Z2 has a shatterproof sheet on the front and back? Some sources seem to be saying yes, and others say no.

Afaik it's gone.

I also have some positive news on the US release. AT&T should also get the phone. Sadly there is some bad news also, the phone won't launch until the CDMA version is ready (D6509?) and that doesn't have an ETA yet. The agreement is that every network gets the phone simultaneously and that T-Mobile and VZW will get some kind of special editions (32GB internal storage I guess). Basically it's a case of waiting and hoping for the best right now.

Pre-order demand has been insane in the UK according to my source, they have 3-4x the number of pre-orders and information sign-ups than they did for the Z1. Sony think they can beat the GS5 in Europe for sales volume and revenue. The Z1 is Sony's best selling flagship to date and they think they can beat that benchmark within a few weeks this time.

I did tell him that launching later than the GS5 in the US will cost them sales, they agreed and said they are working very hard to get their CDMA supply chain built up after a few tester devices in China (Xperia SP Dual is a CDMA phone). He reminded me that it took Apple around 8 months from agreeing a deal with VZW to the iPhone actually being released with a CDMA modem, and they have a smaller amount of resources than Apple.

I also had it confirmed that the marketing spend for the Z2 is going to be huge and that they will look to capitalise on any critical success of the Z2 Tablet better than they did for the Tablet Z. Basically they have adverts ready to go if the reviews are strong (which they will be, I'm sure).

Finally, he confirmed that the 4.4 updates for the Z-series are progressing well, initial beta testing is set to commence soon. The SP, T, TX, V and TL will get 4.4 about 4-6 weeks later on the current timetable, then after that it will be the L, M/Dual, T2 Ultra, M2, E1/Dual, but there is no timeframe for these devices yet.

On a side note he said the mid-range offering hasn't been fully announced for 2014, they don't yet have a successor for the SP announced yet. I guess it will be the non-ultra T2. The M2 is actually the successor to the L (I asked why it's not called the L2, they didn't know, but guessed that marketing want to capitalise on the commercial success of the Xperia M).

From another source I have the 2014 mid-range at 4.8" 720p, 2GB RAM, 16GB and a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor (MSM8916 if that means anything) and an 8MP camera with a slightly larger sensor (same as the 5S).

:blessed: Sony is finally going all in. I told y'all last week HTC is finished & Samsung gotta be shook.
