I see it like this.......People who have a love for the arts and can't imagine themself doing anything else will succeed( esp in the internet age, theres so many ways to promote yourself )......

That's pretty much it. I don't have a passion for the arts like that, but I can respect someone who does and really works at it.

Because school is for education first.....

o is that so? so why are these schools putting "noneducational" majors as options to choose from? maybe these schools should reevaluate whats more important...

graduates getting jobs, or conning people into thinking their interests will get them a job after graduation

if you as an institution cared about the kids getting a job, you as an institution will gear them towards majors that will bring them that....thats what guidance counselors, career services and all that other stuff is there for, but what do they do?

O hey yea you can do Art, and philosophy....:comeon:

these nikkas know what the fukk their doing.....college is a business first

You mean liberal arts degree.

You know how many people graduate from Harvard with a liberal arts degree and get 6 figure jobs?

If you get a bachelors degree you meet the minimum requirements for a lot of white collar jobs. Why not study Philosophy, you can always get trained in most industries you are interested in...these Mickey Mouse degrees may not be high powered, but it does give you more options than a high school degree.

thats not my point....my point is if you are going to say all that, then why are the schools giving these majors the time of day? isnt that a waste of money and funds to spend on text books and all of that to teach classes that dont produce anything to society in terms of job production?

Society is only served by job production?

Like Data-Hawk said, its all about knowledge.

Liberal Arts education is not going anywhere. Colleges are here to serve as many interests and promote learning.

in the US college graduates go to college to get a job....thats mostly what is preached by most households "the best way to get a job is to get a degree in this country"

that is 98 percent of the motivation that people in this country go to college for.

So if that is the case, why are these colleges giving options to students that are basically a detriment towards them getting the financial security and education they need to achieve whatever they want to accomplish? Why is money being spent on text books for courses that wont produce workers, when it can be spent on better programs for the courses that will produce workers?

this isnt the time for the economy to sell dreams, and talk about promoting learning...you dont need college to "learn"

All that promote learning stuff is just hog wash in this economy, because nobody wants to learn shyt if its not bringing them food to eat. People are frustrated because they are going to schools, and these schools are taking their money, and not returning it with jobs after graduation..

Am I saying its 100 percent the schools fault for this? no, what im saying is the schools are in position of power. They and the government control how educated the general public is in terms of specialty.

Its how China and India does it. They do it by scarcity. Only way to make it in this world is Science, Math, Health, Finance, Learning a trade.

Promote that, instead of "you can do anything you want to do" and Im sure more people will suck it up, and do what they hate for a living as long as the paycheck is coming in and there is food to eat.

You are an acception not the rule.

I will guarantee you there are more unemployed film undergrads than engineering or math undergrads....:troll:

The school I went to I was in a class with a daughter of a Getty as well as the son of the President of the school. It really depends on a few factors.

1) Your drive. If you are unmotivated you could get a law degree and will still not be anything.

2) The connections. People talk about college class' being a scam, but for college was more about the connections with others and life experience. I got time to develop with no concept that I could of read on the internet, but was exposed to different walks of people that the internet could of never explained to me through interpersonal relationships.

3) The fact that I have always been self confident and had a strong belief in myself. I have a friend who has B.A. in English and now is a paralegal, he recently went back to school guess who replaced him....an art major. In this day in age it is more about your experience and what school your degree is from then what you majored in. A NYU film MFA is worth more than San Francisco State MBA.

In my opinion the MBA the biggest fraud of all majors. I started my own business through research and surrounding myself with smart people (all who have no MBA) found backers and ran with it. The majority of people I interview for jobs with MBA are generic, Christian Bale American Psycho type motherfukkers who care more about there paycheck than innovation.

To finalize my point please refer to this link from the Harvard business review about MFA being the new MBA Link.

Once again, I am sorry you failed at whatever you tried and feel that the shelter of the internet is a good place for you to put misguided hate towards others, but please at least give prospective.

Ya ya we all know rich people scratch each others backs... This isn't news

College degrees are good for the snob factor but that's about it... As for actual knowledge... They are worthless.

Tell that to a science or engineering major. We learn a ton of actual knowledge that we would need in our respective fields.:childplease:

Snob factor?

If you want a decent job, a college degree gives you a huge advantage.

People act like a STEM degree is the end all be all, not really. Getting a bachelor's in liberal arts or fine arts still lets you apply for jobs that require a minimum of a bachelor's degree. You can major in Art, but if you show you have experience in a particular field or you do very well in the job interview or you network very well, you can still be seen as a qualified candidate.

Most of these guys with rigid and narrow views are usually not gonna provide you much insight, so you going to have to decide for yourselves. I feel anyone who takes someone else's philosophy and blindly apply it to their life deserves whatever they have coming to them.
