I dont think you need to get a degree in the art to get a job in the arts..especially since it's something that can be self studied and self taught. An arts degree is definitely useless unless you're guaranteed to make connections that can guarantee you a job in your particular artform.

It's more like if you get an art degree or anything similar to that, you know what you're getting into so complaining when you get out of school is kind of annoying to people.

you should see some of the resumes and portfolios i see from people in art school. these people are getting robbed and taught nothing. its sad.

nikka you aint neva lied bout dis shyt right here. :whoo:

And i had to push 10 times as hard doin work OUTSIDE of regular class work to get where I'm at skill wise. Da prollem wit a large portion of people who attend art schools is dat dey dont put in dat extra grindin time when their not in class. So many mufukkas i was goin to school wit would do da class assignments and dat's it. Don't do shyt during holiday/summer breaks. Nada. And then wonder why when recruiters from companies come to visit n look through portfolios, dey name is not on da lists of interviews. :rudy:

Mah ass LIVED in da fukkin school's library. I sometimes skipped class so i could go study because so much of da bullshyt dey have goin on in dem classrooms didn't apply to what i really wanted to do. A nikka would be posted up in da back of da library in a corner submerged in Anatomy books all day err day. I used to be in ALL of da figure drawing/painting sessions. Eam when i was just a freshman i would be attendin dem shyts posted up wit mah newsprint and charcoal ready to get at it.

It really is all about how much you're willing to sacrifice and push yourself. It's funny because da cats who came in freshman year dat were :ohhh: status...by da time senior graduation came along dey were :ld: status to me because i made sure to stay up dem extra hours and spent dem weekend nights camped out in da studios workin. Ended up elevatin pass damn near all dem cats come thesis time. :youngsabo:

All about sacrifice and how bad you want it. But dat really pertains to anything in dis life doe. :yeshrug:

it sure does.

the other thing is that art/design school doesn't teach *taste* which is the most important thing for being a good designer. i am not sure they can even teach it, but without it, you can't ever hope to be good because you cant judge your work or others work.

if you have *taste* you can easily learn the skills. if you have the skills, not sure how easily you can learn to have taste. Art/design school produces a bunch of moderately skilled, tasteless people. The sad thing is that half the people with 60k debt dont know what theyre missing.

100k tuition for graphic design?

Tuition And Fees - The Art Institutes Schools

The Art Institute is a for-profit joke school. :snoop:

Go to Carnegie Mellon University, University of Chicago, get the same degrees and let me know where you end up.

Sure as hell won't be homeless or scrounging for change.

Your degree is what you make of it. Ask the people who graduated from Fashion Institute of New York and are in high powered jobs in fashion management.

Yup. Dat shyt also translate to what I do which is concept design/visual development work. Lot of folks can have dat :whew: technical technique down but their shyt 9/10 ends up lookin just like all da other hundreds of concepts out dere. No originality or personal "style" dat separates them from da pack. I call some of dem nikkas "me too" artists because dey think just because dey can draw/paint dat dey can sit dere and formulate ideas/designs for dis particular industry. Wrong. And their shyt just ends up look like a polished turd because dey lack dat one thing dat really makes a concept artist stand out....creativity.

Mah field is so fukkin over saturated wit "me too" artists right now it's :scusthov: breh. I went to a senior thesis show not to long ago to look at some of da graduate's work and you could literally close mah eyes, spin me, and i wouldn't be able to tell who's work is whose because it's all startin to look da fukkin same. Folks are so focused on actual technique instead of substance nowadays. :smh:

Lotta dem nikkas(da technically good ones) just get thrown into da assembly line and are told to paint a pretty picture and kim. But folks' happy to do it just to say dey're a "concept artists". :rudy: :yeshrug:

If I had children, I wouldn't let them waste my money on some bullshyt like art or some lib arts degree you can't monetize.

You go to school to get a job, not to fukking indulge in your hobbies. There's Google for that.

I find it funny that a person who openly admits he's self-centered, materialistic and has zero desire to have children is giving his views on what he'd tell his children to do with their dreams, aspirations and education :russ:

no doubt. the other issue is there are a lot of "artists" out there who should be designers. and a lot of "designers" who should be artists. i am a designer and like the restrictions and revisions for a goal and whatever, not attached to my product. but some designers get :sadbron: when they're asked revise or change like they're artists. and then there's artists who have no idea of what art is and would be much better just using their skills to execute other peoples needs, i.e., design.

:manny:

It's what I'd do on the one-off chance I decide to have children.
