Al Green got his break in Memphis where his producer was from. So the music he made was considered Southern Soul. I guess it's similar to how The D.O.C. was from the south but the music he made was considered west coast G Funk.

That's the thing though DOC was Texas nikka that made Cali music and I didn't even know Al Green was born in Michigan until I got older. I always assumed he was from Memphis. You can listen to the difference between Al Green beats and say somebody from Motown beats. Most Northern Soul seems more dream like and smooth or romantic no homo. Southern soul is a little more rough around the edges, old school party music.

You not far off, Al Green come outta Arkansas, my wife’s fam grew up with his. I think he moved to Michigan at some point later on. Regardless you right, Al Green’s whole sound came outta Willie Mitchell’s camp, which was straight up and down Memphis.
