Is this the same Spike Lee who was born in Atlanta, is a millionaire and who just recently put his multi-million dollar pad located on the Upper East Side on the market? That Spike Lee?

Sounds legit

well most young/progressive people with money tend to seek those environments in the first place.

They love trying to embrace areas with " an edge" and it gives them something to talk about.

Everything is cyclical.

The point is to stay ahead of the curve.

No longer can you just sit in an area and just live on til you die.

If you want that feel, you have to be willing to move.

Bullshyt. You own something and you can live in a single place as long as you like.

And my original post explicitly stated that while gentrification is happening those places still have "an edge" but you were promoting fully gentrified areas, those are bland and lack that "edge." Not sure why anyone would want to live amongst White people only.

Capitalism at work bruhs

I see Spike's point and I can understand his frustrations but this is how the capitalist system works. Gentrification is an off set process of the "free market", and when you have money, you can live anywhere you want. This is exactly why these white people are moving into Brooklyn, Harlem, and even the Bronx. They get to pay cheaper rents than they'd pay in Manhattan, instantly driving up the rents, pushing those who can't pay out. As more "affluent" young professionals continue to move in, they only attract more people who can pay in these neighborhoods. They also have the option to buy units, lofts in old office spaces that have been renovated for residential space. These are littered throughout Brooklyn and Harlem and white people want them.

Then the business follows and this is where you really start to see neighborhoods transforming as the old community centers are revamped into a new state-of-the art modern facility. Coffee shops, more restaurants, bars, maybe a night club. The parks now have regular maintenance, you see white people playing with their dogs there. All this is walking distance and Manhattan's only a short train ride away. This is how urban development and gentrification work. Cities and different neighborhoods throughout transform over decades for different social, political and economic reasons - there is no stopping this process.

Yet if I hit the lottery and tried to do the exact same thing they would re write laws to keep us out of there neighborhoods.

There needs to be an audience for those movies
People always say this, but don't support the few ones that come out. No one saw the Mandela film; Red Tails(Tuskegee Airmen movie); Rosewood, Great Debaters. You want to see a Garvey film, then purchase a LEGAL copy(digital or DVD) of the films I listed above or a Hidden Colors, then you'll start to see the films that you want to see made.

actually..i said that because his last movies were trash. Red hook Summer and Miracle At St anns were SMH worthy. Spike needs a comeback bad..Tyler perry is killing him out here.........Atleast if Spike goes the Black historical figure route...His work could atleast be acknowledged after the fact like all geniuses. 50 years from now the masses would look at aFredrick douglas movie by Spike Lee that had low support and give its proper acknowledgement.

renting DVD's counts as support and I remember renting Red tails and Great Debators. Hidden Colors is a grassroots docu....I dont think that fits in the same category.

This won't happen in detroit.

I just don't see it.

They said the same about Fort Greene, Bed-Stuy, and Williamsburg..and look at it now.

I think it will though. It's a top 10 city population wise. The potential is there. Deals are being made on the upper echelons as we speak.

Besides, I don't see the real risk in investing in it. I found a very nice piece of property there for $200, some are even cheaper. I'm doing my research and making a few phone calls. But if it's reasonable, I may throw my cards in. I don't know what the mentality of black folks in Detroit is now...but they need to get organized and sweep up most of the real estate while they can. Because if they don't...they have no one to blame but themselves.

Wait a minute...didn't your first post imply that people who were doing that and are being pushed out need to stop complaining?

Is it black folk lost or shorties owe for ice?

AND...people aren't BUYING these properties. You can't OWN what you don't BUY.

Then you should specify which stage of gentrification you're focused on.

FYI...people are moving BACK into cities across the country.

People want public transportation and ease of access to aspects of community, bars, clubs, lounges, corner stores, niche shopping, etc.

You're talking about cities that don't rely on a single source of economic base.

NY is just gonna always cycle in terms of demographics and economy.

Detroit was more or less a one trick pony.

Dudes love to call it "slumming" when they see graffiti and bus stops in their hood to give it "character" and the occasional homeless person to call it a "real hood" with "live jazz" and shyt at the corner :heh:

...but they want that whole foods and condo in the same walking distance

I don't know man...the Chinese seem to disagree...they are reportedly buying up real estate in detroit by the 100s now.

Black people don't own so it's not relevant.

I'm well aware of all of this Napoleon. The process of gentrifying is better than the end result is all I'm saying.

Not at all. I would love to live in a community that had NO national chains and corporations and everything was small businesses in the local economy.

The chinese are buying everything that breathes :heh:

It doesn't matter.

They're copping assets abroad to diversify.

Hey it's your money :manny:

The property I've seen costs $200, I'll look into the back taxes and a program to pay it off if I'm qualified.

My wife and I spent more than 5x that in AC 2 weeks ago for a weekend, and I waste money all the time...so I don't see the risk.
