Suge had the chance to make death row big again when he came back and almost linked a deal with Lyor Cohen in '02. The catch was that Lyor wanted the masters to everything so who knows even if he would've gave them that he still would have been done dirty. I forgot where I heard this so take it with a grain of salt I guess.

i remember hearin' this shyt too. but shyt, i don't blame suge for holdin' onto his master and definitely not doin' business with lyor cohen of all people

There never was a lot of westcoast labels. Most of the majors were based back east, most of the hip hop imprints were back east. In Los Angeles there was Priority, Deathrow, Ruthless, Capitol and Delicious. Delicious wasn't a gangsta rap label they put out Young MC and Pharcyde records. Priority had Cube and Ras Kass (fukked him over a bit), few others here and there but ended up being merged into Capitol. Once the 'all star' team blew up everyone went their own ways instead of say all going over to Aftermath.

Kurupt ran to Antra...

Warren G and WC were already signed to Def Jam...

Snoop left to No Limit which was a Priority sub anyways...

Deathrow ended up stalling out Nate Dogg and Crooked I to where they ended up doing very little...

So to answer your question, Deathrow and Ruthless were the only gangsta rap minded labels and they ended up both being killed by Deathrow/Suge Knight....

Aftermath put out Game and Xzibit (platinum artists) just for the record...not to mention when Snoop, Kurupt, and Nate Dogg all went back to working with Dre/Aftermath/Deathrow 2.0 they started to make bigger records.

Xzibit wasnt Aftermath, he was Loud Records. Since his first album. But general perception made people believe he was Aftermath/Interscope
cuz of the Up In Smoke tour, the features etc. But it had to do with Dr Dre starting Aftermath and the cats he had around (ie. King T etc), which was Xzibit's crew. He probably did some writing still but he was never Aftermath.

I heard Xzibit wrote "bytch Please" by Snoop. Dont know if he wrote Snoop's lyrics tho or if its 100% legit or w/e.

Cali nikkas killed two of the greatest rappers ever, they should forever be blackballed from the industry.
:wow:
the short answer is, suge ruined it for everybody. major labels were sick of the senseless violence, the unpredictability and the threats, so they stopped fukking with l.a. rappers.

well X is on the first bytch Please so he obviously write his own verse

not many labels EVER in any region reach the sales and notoriety of Death Row. but you were deaf or buggin on the west if you didn't listen to shyt like this back in the day

There was some labels after that like DPG Records, Dogghouse etc. (funny thing is all founded by former death row artists) that released quality music & shyt but no west coast based label ever came close to that dynasty status death row had back then

Right Xzibit's 'paper work' didn't say Aftermath but all his music, the people he hung around with, was all Aftermath and DPG.

Dr Dre was Executive producer on his biggest projects and clearly made them Aftermath projects.

In the context of the question, why didn't westcoast labels 'do more and put out bigger names' Aftermath should be listed as a westcoast label who helped Xzibit become a big name. Loud certainly didn't do that.

Nah, some of the best west coast music came out late '90s/early '00s

In terms of quality music you are right. DJ Quik, Suga Free, E-40, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eastsidaz, etc. all dropped some great projects.

But if we're talking power and relevance as a whole, it was nowhere near the same after Deathrow crumbled.

Smoke and mirrors. Only thing that matters is the quality of the music.
