Spin: What was it like when Aaliyah died?

I had just started my senior year of HS and a few friends and I were talking about it at lunch the Monday after it happened that weekend. One of my boys was like "Real talk, if you had walked up on that crash site and the body was still warm, you wouldn't have had some fun with it?"

One of the other dudes at the table and I were both like: "Um ... "

He and the other dude then started debating us, saying that nobody would be able to resist at least feeling her up.

It was an awkward discussion. That's really the only thing I remember about her death. I don't even recall where I was or what I was doing when I actually got the news of her death.

And yeah, Rock the Boat was non-stop on the radio after that (I went to HS in FL).

I remember seeing it on a message board and being sad as hell the rest of the day. And i also recall CNN doing a segment on it and that's how i found out that they had to much weight on the plane.

i remember it being said that they knowingly exceeded the weight limit with all the equipment they put on the plane.

Before she died and before her album released I kept wondering if she was ever gonna release another album and the summer she did, the R&B female game got so heavy (Beyonce was being touted as a solo star with that Carmen movie and DC's third album, Alicia Keys just debut, Faith and Mary J were about to comeback) I wondered if she was gonna drop the album and go off do like movies forever (She may have been lucky missing out on those Matrix sequels and working with the director of Romeo Must Die again(

Anyways, I remember didnt hear anything Sunday Morning and then I was flicking channels and some news show had a picture of her and the report had just ended with the woman saying "Some very sad news there..." and I was like... "Yo what happened did she die?"

Sure enough a couple of hours later I caught a news report and it was scrolling on a ticker and they had the full story.

MTV and all urban stations were locked on her for a week and VMAs even had a tribute section. Her albums were dope even though I wasnt sure her last one was the strongest but it had to be listened properly again.

fukked up part is 2 weeks later 9/11 happened.

Crazy time in music and culture with that and then other things looming after.
