No it's about knowing the history of who we're dealing with. Europeans lie about damn near everything related to history. Why do you think they would suddenly tell the truth about this?
Just use logic for a second. If you're the King of Spain or England and your army has conquered this new land, why would you let it get named after some random guy instead of yourself?
It was mostly English monarchs that did this. You don't really see geographical locations named after Spanish or French monarchs with exception to maybe King Louis of France.

Virginia - Queen Elizabeth
North/South Carolina - King Charles
Georgia - King George
Louisiana - King Louis
Alberta, Canada - Princess Louise Alberta
Prince Edward Island, Canada - Prince Edward
Spanish Central & South America
??
So this really wasn't a thing outside of the English. And the English arrived in America long after the Spanish.
