Roethlisberger's shoulder 'sore' after sack by Bengals' Burfict

Ben Roethlisberger’s injured right shoulder is “sore,” but he said there apparently is no ligament damage and is “day-to-day” for next Sunday’s divisional playoff game in Denver.

Speaking briefly today as he walked through the locker room at the Steelers’ practice facility, Roethlisberger said he had a magnetic resonance imaging on his throwing shoulder after he was injured on a sack by Vontaze Burfict on the final play of the third quarter. Roethlisberger, though, said he was not sure the extent of the injury.

Despite the injury, Roethlisberger returned for the final series and led the Steelers on their improbable winning field goal drive, completing 5 of 8 passes for 40 yards. Roethlisberger told the coaches he could barely throw the ball longer than 10 yards.

“Coach (Todd Haley) called one deep one in there and, obviously, he had to because time was running out,” Roethlisberger said after the game. “So I went over to the sideline and said, ‘Coach you can’t do that anymore, I can’t throw it that far.’ We knew we had to work our way down the field.”

Meantime, All-Pro receiver Antonio Brown, who was put in concussion protocol after an illegal hit to the helmet by Burfict following an incomplete pass, is said to be fine and should be able to play against the Broncos.

6 arrested in assaults during Steelers-Bengals game:

Emotions ran high on the field and in the stands during the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers Wild-Card game Saturday night, leading to at least six fan arrests by the game's end.

The rivalry between the two teams reached a boiling point in Saturday's game that concluded the Bengals' playoff dreams with a 18-16 loss. That tension extended to some fans who chose to take out frustrations with punches, headbutts, and one man even urinated on another inside Paul Brown Stadium, according to police.

The first altercation occurred in a line to get inside the stadium around 8 p.m. just before the game's kickoff. Police said it began when Jared McCarty, 19, of Reading, argued with a woman about cutting in line at an entrance gate and stole her Bengals hat. :russ:

McCarty, who wore a Bengals jersey, threw the hat away, police said, and the two groups separated only to run into each other again at their seats inside the stadium. The argument resumed in the stands and McCarty allegedly punched the woman in the head, causing her to fall to the ground, court documents state.:lolbron:

Police discovered a fake identification card on McCarty upon his arrest. The teen admitted to drinking alcohol, police said.

McCarty is accused of falsification, underage drinking, theft, and assault. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

A Steelers fan who traveled from Westville, Indiana is accused of punching a woman in the face as he exited Paul Brown Stadium around 10 p.m. :mjlol:Tyler Matthys wore a Steelers jersey when police arrested him and accused him of the assault. His court date is not yet scheduled.

Cooke, who wore a Bengals hoodie, is accused of fighting with the man and punching him in the face, court documents state. He is facing disorderly conduct and assault charges. Cooke is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Police said David Grillo, 25, of Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, was wearing a black jersey as he walked up an aisle in the stadium and threw a beer at a fan during the game. The beer hit the fan in the face and caused lacerations, police said. Grillo is accused of assault. His court date is not yet scheduled.

A Cheviot man who wore a black shirt to the game, is accused of head-butting a man in the face:huhldup:. Phillip Ross, 29, was arrested at Paul Brown Stadium and is accused of assault.

Ben is one tough b*stard, but it's crazy how frail he is.

If the Patriots and Steelers both win, I may have nightmares of Rob Ninkovich and his alligator arms trying to tackle Ben.:mjcry:.

Worst tackler in the NFL.

It should be a great game against noodle arm though.

Antonio Brown named Pro Football Focus Offensive Player of the Year

:blessed:

His status to play on Sunday in the Divisional round may be in question at the moment, but the excellent of his 2015 season is not, which is why Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brownwas for the second time in as many years named to the first-team All-Pro team, having also been recognized on the second-team the year prior.

The sixth-year veteran received yet another accolade today, being recognized by Pro Football Focus as their Offensive Player of the Year after the statistics website gave him the highest grade that they have ever given a wide receiver since they began tracking data in 2007.

PFF’s description of his season even begins with the acknowledgement of the fact that he had to toil through a quarter of the season with the services of backup quarterbacks, particularly with Mike Vick under center, during which his numbers suffered notably.

When Ben Roethlisberger was on the field for the majority of a game, Brown excelled unconditionally, and had he been able to play with the Steelers’ starting quarterback for a full 16-game season, his prorated numbers would have blown away previous recorded with approximately 160 receptions and over 2100 receiving yards.

Still, it was not his mere numbers, but how they were achieved, that earned Brown near universal recognition, including PFF’s annual award, with his on-field excellence being attributable largely to the extensive work that he puts in during practice and in the class room and film study.

All of his work—and of course his natural abilities, not to mention the years-long effort that has gone into building a rapport and trust with Roethlisberger—has enabled Brown to exceed expectations annually, continuing to build off of past successes and reach new heights. As PFF tells it:

Despite his small stature, he can get open at every level of the field using slippery route-running and above-average downfield ball skills to make plays. In addition to winning within the framework of the offense, Brown and QB Ben Roethlisberger have excellent chemistry when plays break down, and Roethlisberger’s improvisational skills mesh perfectly with Brown’s ability to lose a defender during the scramble drill.

The description goes on to note that he has only dropped five passes on the season in their data, which ranks him as fifth-best in terms of drop rate. Brown finished as the second runner-up for PFF’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2014, and he has only improved since then.

This year, the first runner-up was Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer, who had by far the best season of his long career, leading Arizona to a 13-3 season and a playoff bye week, grading out positively in every game for PFF.

Behind Palmer as the second runner-up, as should be no surprise, was Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, who actually finished the season with the same number of receptions as Brown, and a bit more yards, finished second or tied for second all-time in both numbers. He also led the league in yards after the catch.
