This game is pretty rough. First off it still has save points which in itself is antiquated. There's no excuse for games to not have save anywhere functionality. Couple that with the unskippable lines of dialog because instead of cutscenes the game gates you off in a small section as characters talk and it auto-runs through dialog and it's a disaster.
There was one point that I got a game over 3 times in the same area and I had to progress through the same 15-20 minute stretch because there weren't any save points placed in it. same dialog you can't skip same fights leading up to the boss fight and then a boss fight after that I almost lost on my third run through.
The leveling system is pretty crappy too. everything is a seamless world with menu overlays after fights but you have to go through a couple screens just to find out what level your characters are. turns out I'm probably 3-4 levels behind the boss enemies I'm fighting right now but the normal enemies are so weak I kill them in seconds and they aren't giving me enough experience or money.
The skill system is one that you have to find books to learn skills instead of naturally learning them. I get a book and many of my characters have a skill they can learn with it but it can only be used on a single character as it's a consumable item.
For the first 5 hours there's only one healer in the 7 person party. with 7 people the battles can get pretty chaotic and are difficult to manage. also that healer is very squishy and she's usually among the first people to die in a battle.
I feel like I barely know the characters. I got the full party pretty quick minus one character that's still in and out and it's basically just people popping up and joining. I've done some of the private actions but they aren't really making the characters more endearing to me. Most of them are just a few lines of auto dialog.
The story so far is very subpar. Amnesiac loli find out who she is as people come after her. In typical Star Ocean fashion the game takes place on a primitive world and so far most of the sci-fi aspects are in the background.
I think this game being 25 hours is a huge positive because I likely would quit on it if it was much longer. The only real thing better than Star Ocean 4 is the fact that this game doesn't have one of the worst cast ever assembled in a JRPG like that game did. I'd say Infinite Undiscovery is a far superior game to this one. This is a bargain bin game at best. Do yourself a favor if you have a Wii U also and play Tokyo Mirage Sessions. It's twice the game this one is.
