I saw this in theaters in 1997 for a friends little bro's birthday, I was 12.
The way I remember it, was we took it 100% serious and loved it, and it was like a favorite movie around that time for us.

Read the book two years ago and I would love to see a faithful adaptation to the book. I can see it upsetting a lot of people who go in expecting satire like the 90s film

District 9 was a very good movie. If Neil is writing this more closely to the book. The tone will be much different than the 90's movie (which is an era classic, imo)

Being faithful to the novel would include casting a Filipino-descent actor as Johnny Rico, and I don't see Blomkamp doing that.
They tried that with another Verhoven film, Robocop and while an interesting take, it didn't hit the same way as it missed the satirical element.
Now if they do District 9 style and stay faithful to the 97 film, it would be Fuego...

I actually like the Robocop remake and how Samuel L's character was like a satirical take on a Fox News host. What missed the mark for me (and it was only minor to me) was the scaled down violence
