You sure? Aren’t comedy specials and reality shows cheap compared to other types of shows?

Essentially yes as the majority of those comedy specials are filmed by the comedians themselves, which are then sold to Netflix. They don't really have any involvement in the production process to my understanding. I cold be wrong.

I always wondered how Netflix can sustain this model where they are literally pumping millions into producing movies with a list actors and big time production budgets.
:patrice:
And the answer was simple.

They can't.
:mjlol:

It was never about sustaining it or making profit. It was about getting the most marketshare and users onboard their platform so they could be the leader in the streaming space. Which they still are even though they are losing some customers. Most tech and social media companies operate the same way. Get the users first then try to figure out how to monetize it. Think Uber, spotify, instagram etc.. all market leaders but losts billion per year to bring in users.

Netflix problem is they forgot to focus on quality and not quantity and they they still haven't realized the binge model is severely flawed. There is value in giving people time to discuss between episodes. With the binge model people only talk about the season for a week then move on.

HBO Max definitely has better movies, but Netflix is the goat for series. When it comes to hours of content, Netflix is king. 3 seasons of Stranger Things is worth 7-8 movies on HBO max. Add in Kingdom, Squid Game, Black Mirror, Luke Cage, and The Crown, it's a wrap.
