@theworldismine13 We had this discussion in another thread approx a month ago. where someone went in on how you can't just pop up and become a coder over night.well not become a very very good one that can possibly get that gig at google(in the mean time... before we start our own businesses. we need to learn from the big boys first..take what you know from them, turn their problems into solutions then do your own thing.

anyway. it starts when you're a kid.keep ya head in the game early. Tell ya kids, ya nieces, nephews, ya neighbor that has little kids.

This Robot Teaches Kids How to Code
^^watch the little video.

then read this full article. since the video doesnt show enough.

Root Is a Little Robot on a Mission to Teach Kids to Code

and i found this vid

programming is called languages for a reason. its like learning an actual language such as spanish for non spanish speakers or chinese, etc. You start to learn it young and your mind adapts to it quicker and its 2nd nature by the time you're a teen.

imagine if every black kid that could knew multiple coding languages as 8 year olds on up. imagine what would happen to society. black adults would then have a lot of power since they would have a lot of the knowledge. sure that cism would fight it and fight it some more. but when an entire race of people actually know more than most. at some point you have to ask them "so...how is it done. how did you do that?"

lastly, i told yall before. you dont need to know every single language. But if you understand the LOGIC behind coding. you're light years ahead of most. IF, THEN
IF i do this THEN this will happen.

now with all that said. it is possible to start coding as an adult. But the type of mentality you need to start and keep up with it while creating your own projects is not your average joe.

good thread
i'm dead serious about what i said in that other thread. it starts with the parents. get at these kids parents. anytime you have a chance to talk to some little black kids parents. get at em about it. obviously, this applies to any race. but since blk folks are in such a deficit we need it that much more.

:mjlol: This basic and reasonale concept was viewed by him in another thread as begging the whiteman for a job and a left over ideology from a "failed" concept of integration and civil rights.smh

I recommend reading about Bill Gates climbing out of his window at night as kid in order to get computing time on the University of Washington's computers.

For the last few years I have studied why some blacks are successful in academics and so many unsuccessful. It boils down to the parents. Black immigrant parents and non-black parents learn how to work the system and seek the best possible educational opportunities for their black child. Most native black parents think that once they send their child to a generic school, they have done their job. They expect the school to handle everything else.

One of the videos above shows kids at KIPP. KIPP is a school for kids who are behind and need to get on grade level. That school is not going to produce future STEM professionals.

Telling most native black parents about getting their 8 year-old into coding will be the same as telling the wall. Unless of course you find and pay for the program and provide transportation for their child, then they will be interested. I see this happening in sports.

The reason that NBA and NFL is full of native blacks is because there is a strong development system that doesn't require parental involvement. If a basketball player or football player has talent some coach, program, private school, or even foster/adoptive family will take responsibility for the child.

Look at some of the "country club" sports. Many of the parents are either immigrants or non-black. Five of the nine highest picks in the 2015 MLB draft had a non-black mother. Over eighty percent of black NHL players have a non-black mother. I haven't bothered to check to see if the full black players are the children of immigrants. The first black American to win an Olympic gold in swimming was half white. The first black American woman to win an Olympic swimming medal was born in Puerto Rico to parents from Guyana. (A girl from NYC who just got into all 8 Ivy League colleges is also from Guyana). Lia Neal won an Olympic swimming medal in 2012 and she is half Chinese. Venus and Serena with two native black parents are anomalies for country club sports. Former tennis player James Blake, white mother. Tiger Woods.

@theworldismine13 I won't be following education closely after this semester. I'm giving up the education blogs. I watched that Breakfast Club video of Diddy talking about his new charter school. When he threw that bottle of vodka on the table, I said "The terrorists have won".

Achieved art degree previously

Has 4.0

what do you disagree with? that you have to start as a kid? no. you SHOULD, thats your best bet. and engineering is a broad title. engineering in what discipline?

everything you said is true except for the part about telling black parents to get their kids to code. that can be done right now. there is so many FREE stuff online where they can start without a dime invested. all you need is time invested.

Yes its easier if u start as a kid. Of course anything is.

I disagree with the attitude. Seems defeatest to me. Humans are a life long learning species.

You learn things a lot better as a kid, these are facts

Learning how to code doesn't pigeonhole you into a career in CS, but it will teach you how to think a certain way and make you VERY valuable early on. Its a different ballgame now.

My mentor at my job runs an analytics dept. He graduated with a history major. "See, you dont need a STEM degree to get into the STEM world" :stop: He was a DBA in high school. Kids have to acquire skills that will help them in the future early on.

in the end its all about culture, we just have to figure out a way to have a massive shift in culture in the black community

I think right now we are and need to be in a brain storming mode, so im willing to give anybody including diddy a chance

Some English majors were crowing when fellow English major Justin Trudeau become Prime Minister of Canada. They ignored the minor point that Justin has also studied engineering and the major point that he is the son of Pierre Trudeau.
