Chinese use neige for both “that” and “umm”.

Let’s break this down.

I think I heard “nei ge” twice.

He said neige before he said good night. Chinese people often use neige while speaking in English because they’re thinking of the English translation. “Neige” is one of the most common phrases in spoken Chinese.

It’s very common to hear Chinese say “neige neige neige....” repeatedly when thinking aloud.

In Chinese neige also means “that one”.

“Ge” is a modifier like saying “one” in English. Zhe ge means “this one” and nei ge means “that one”.

So it could be that he was identifying which one he wanted Steph to sign.
