Ballmer was right all along and I think this deserves mention on here. His team had the best approach to all these new devices with different screen sizes and uses. Android/Chrome OS is fragmented, and iOS/Mac OS X still lacks features that Windows does better due to its open nature.
Remember how people tried to shyt on him and the Windows team for trying to implement the windows "metro/modern" look on Windows Phone, Windows Desktop/Tablet, and of course on the XBOX? Well, now everyone appears to be on board because the team finally found the perfect balance of giving the desktop users what they wanted in the traditional start menu, yet still leaving the metro and windows store option in there as well that casuals on the xbox, phones, and tablets have learned to use.
I will also like to say that Windows 8.1 is just fine, did it hurt the gaming side of things? Sure, but almost everything else is better on Windows 8 over 7. I don't even think there is much debate, from search to automatically typing in the modern layout everything just worked much better than old desktop systems. All of this is starting to make sense to people especially now that you see the benefits once if you own an xbox one, windows desktop, tablet, or even a windows phone. Everything is starting to fit like a glove, yes even better than iOS/Mac OS X Yosemite (which is filled with bugs btw).
The results/facts in 2015:
I think the only one on here who saw this stuff going down the way it did was @ExodusNirvana and to some extent @Hiphoplives4eva
Remember the steam machines? I am still waiting to see how SteamOS turns out, but I am not so sure its really necessary anymore with the improvements to Windows 10.
I am also interested in seeing how Google eventually ties in ChromeOS and Android even closer together. That is taking a bit longer than I expected.

Word is still the go to office platform
Exchange is still what businesses use
The XBOX One has a better UI than the PS4 and Wii U
Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are the only OS's that give you a desktop class OS that works well on tablets. Apple and Google still haven't figured this out.
Mobile Phone OS is debatable, but I think Windows Phone gets a bad wrap just because it doesn't have the market share. It's a nice mobile OS for smartphones and only trailing Android IMO.
Windows is available to more people, still dominates market share. Less buggy than OS X Yosemite.
Able to full integrate with more devices than Apple does due to their walled garden approach

3 problems though and its worth mentioning in here as well:Exchange is still what businesses use

Windows RT was a disaster, that shyt should have never shipped. It only fragmented the userbase to go in at a cheaper price point. Nobody cared, the surface rt flopped and is now HP touchpad status.
Windows 8, while an improvement over 7 was way too aggressive in how they were trying to push desktop users into the modern UI. This was the only problem with Windows 8 IMO and worth pointing out.
The XBOX One...you all already know how they botched that launch, but at least they rebounded well.

Everything else has been just fine and it's good to see Microsoft back on their feet after their slips. This is not a "Post Ballmer" idea either, he was the one that helped orchestrate this shyt years ago and it is finally coming to fruition. I am sure bloggers and others online will still view him somewhat negatively, but those who really know how this stuff works in the background, know that he deserves major credit for all of this.Windows 8, while an improvement over 7 was way too aggressive in how they were trying to push desktop users into the modern UI.
