I think the only reason people are shytting on My Wife and Kids is because it wasn't a 'black' show per se. It was like Family Matters - whole cast was black but the show's humor was mostly 'white-washed'

That being said....My Wife and Kids was funny as hell sometimes, and corny the other times

Yeah I can see that, but even the corny humor was funny to me on that show. Mike dawg made it work, plus he halfway be laughing in the scenes himself when he knew the shyt is corny.

Let me put it like this:

Besides that little intellectual kid, can you think of any notable side-characters on MWaK?

Martin had Garrett Morris, Tracy Morgan, David Allen Grier, among others...

Seinfeld had Newman, David Putty, etc...

My Wife and Kids had like two characters worth talking about outta the whole cast

Actually, yeah

Tony (Claire's boyfriend) and Calvin (Vanessa's father) were funny as hell and had some of the best moments of the show

Even the one-time characters/characters with only a few episodes were hilarious (Bobby Shaw, Mike's friend who tried the 'Hair It Is' product, that Asian couple with the horny boyfriend)

great thread. to this day, this is still one of the few shows that will have you rolling on the floor for 30 minutes after all these years.

but it gotta give it to the wayans for that era.

best shows of the late '90s/early 2000s era:
1. wayans bros
2. steve harvey show
3. smart guy
4. the hughleys
5. jamie foxx show
6. parent hood
7. bernie mac show
8. moesha
9. unhappily ever after(might as well count it as a black show.)
10. in the house
11. sister sister(wow. this show was on in the mid-90s too.)

i feel like im forgetting something.

lol. i remember that one. T.K. str8 chumped that wannabe thug r&b singer.

whos that chick anyway? she used to be on the steve harvey show sometimes.

ive been wanting to plug that since "dont be a mennace". i knew right then & there that she'd hurt a d*ck.

:usure: oh and acting was garbage in the parent hood i used to like it but its hard not to notice

GOATS: Jamie Foxx Show, Wayans Bros, Cosbys, A different World, Fresh Prince, Bernie Mac Show, Everybody Hates Chris

GREAT to GOOD ONES: Moesha, Steve Harvey Show, Parent Hood, Smart Guy, Sister Sister, My Wife and Kids, In the House

MEHHS:
Malcolm and Eddie, Thea, Hugleys, Kenan and Kel (if I had common sense at that age...used to be a goat to me)

no martin in goats? no living single in great to good ones :usure: my wife and kids not in bottom tier?

by the midway point of the series, the petersons became arguably the goat sitcom family.

What makes it watered down? Because it didn't try to be as serious? Difference is Wife N Kids was a funnier show. Hughleys centered around, White people do shyt like this vs Black people do shyt like that, type of humor. Wife N Kids wasn't nothing like that. Mike dawg was clowning & Janet was pop-locking. Katt Williams as Bobby Shaw might be the goat recurring guest appearance on a sitcom.

"wife n kids" was mad corny. i cant recall ever even laughing at that show. and it didnt have dope storylines to make up for the lack of laughs either. the hughleys on the hand was gut-wrenching laughter from start to finish all the way down to the kids' friends.

there was more than just race humor on the hughleys, but yes the backdrop of the show was a strong-minded black man moving his family to the suburbs and adjusting.

and yes "wife n kids" was a BLATANTLY watered-down version of the hughleys. this is common knowledge. they used majority of the hughleys blueprint(all the way down to damon wayan's profession) except they conveniently left out the main backdrop of the show, and coincidentally this was aired on abc after they dropped the hughleys.:hmm: im not saying its watered-down because its not a serious show. its a sitcom. the hughleys wasnt even serious most of the time. wife & kids was purposely watered-down for middle america.

I'll say this once, and I'll say it again.
You could not pay me to watch Family Matters in these modern times again. It aged horribly.
Even as a kid I knew that the Kenan and Kel show was ass.
Wayan's Bros. Show season 3-5 is GOAT.
Smart Guy is up there with the greats,
it definitely showcases the popular urban culture of the youth of the mid to late 90's properly. Even might be a great contender compared against the best.
Malcolm and Eddie, The Hughleys were decent shows.
So was Steve Harvey and the Jamie Foxx show.
Parent Hood was the GOAT.
Robert dozing off and having day dreams, were great. It feel off when they replaced two main characters, his son and his best friend.
Moesha was dope too. If Smart Guy represented Popular Urban music, Moesha reped Neo-Soul.
Dope vibe and life lessons.
Plus the father on Moesha and Parent Hood deserved awards for the best urban father ever.

But the greatest of all time black/urban show ever,
hands down,
even if it only recorded one season,
My Brother and Me.
Everyone still talk about and ask about that show.
My mother last week told me out of nowhere how much she enjoyed watching that show with me and how she liked it.
