There wasn't many other reasons I could think of why the best receiver in your franchise's history could be released

I see Carolina's FO logic between why they picked who they did....a transcendent young QB who seemingly could only mature through sole leadership or an older great receiver guy who they deemed a nuisance

They handled it very poorly and it doesn't sound like he was given too many chances to change and give the reigns up, but I gotta think Smitty himself knew that he should've gave Cam some more control
Exactly. But tbh i don't see how it could've ended smoothly. Smitty seem like one of them nikkas that takes any and everything personal. So not sure what the folks in charge coulda done to make his exit better.

Dude was 34, with a bad knee, was beefing with his young QB, and had a year left on his deal. I thought we shoulda traded him if anything, but i understood why we let him roll.

We missing his and Norman's fire every team need a nikka like that

Panthers needed a guy like him who wouldn't have backed down against Denver.

Definitely don't think he would've allowed Cam to get speared in the dome every week

This is one thing you can't deny if we had his toughness on the Offensive side of the ball the Super Bowl coulda had a completely different outcome. Smitty aint getting punked by Talib (as a matter of fact Smitty already sonned him) and he's making those clutch catches.

Damn thinking about what could of been

2005 he should have won MVP, but NFL writers have a bias of giving that award to wide receivers. Him and Calvin Johnson were the only two receivers I've even seen put an offense on their back for a whole season

He's lucky he played in this market, cause in this PC NFL culture we're in now, media would have dragged him through the coals calling him a bad teammate with the way how he acted. If T.O. did half the stuff Steve did, he would have been blackballed sooner. He ended a practice squad player's career:heh:

On a side note The Football Life Documentary on Smitty this Friday is going to be :ohlawd:

What always stands out to me about this whole situation is he was only gonna play one more year. :francis:

Cam would've been iight.

And this was coming off the year we got sent home by the 49ers in the offs. We was already on the rise.

Just one more year brehs we could've sent him out the right way

I know Smitty may not have been the best teammate but he always been a professional at the end of the day.

pretty much what I expected
