I love how he sings the first 2 verses in a soft, whispery tone. And then when verse 3 comes, He gets real passionate vocally. It's perfect. Song is like a good dream.

Classic fukking track!!!

A top 5 Stevie track and if anybody knows that man's catalog you know how fukking hard that is. Innervision alone got like 2 top 5 tracks alone :wow::mjcry:

I actually think Hotter Than July is his worst album but that's funny as shyt because Stevie's worst album is a 3.5 star album at worst :blessed: the god.

PS:

Worst album overall or from his classic period?

I think it’s the weakest of his classic period but it’s still my second favorite, the first 5 or 6 songs are amazing.

Hotter than July (1980) is after his Classic period which ended with Songs in the Key of Life.

It isn’t his worst for me but among the lowest of his known/recognized albums- the official worst belongs to Characters, in general the albums from the 80s.

False narrative to me bruh. His 80s albums were highly underrated

That's fair, I think Hotter Than July, Signed Sealed & Delivered, and Where I'm Coming From are all in the same tier for me in terms of quality.

If we're talking overall though Hotter Than July isn't worse than his first 4 albums, Down to Earth, My Cherie Amour, or anything after Hotter Than July.

It def isn’t but I move the goal posts- the albums leading up to Music of My Mind (on Girl Blue you can still hear youngish Stevie) he hadn’t developed or wasn’t using his adult voice and went with that tinny-sounding tenor. The albums also were so distinctly 60s, which I think require more than other periods to be “into” and that’s when he did the vast majority of his covers (We can work it out, Bang Bang, Shadow of Your Smile). I skip those albums save for a handful of songs, but with Characters for example he already had his voice and sound developed, I think they happened to miss the mark by a lot. Get it is a bad song esp for MJ to be in his prime- it sounds like it could’ve gone on the Ghostbusters soundtrack. I didn’t listen to the woman in red but it’s a soundtrack.

All that to say, those albums minus Cherie Amour and SSD singles are lesser known than HTJ and also had the benefit of the doubt by preceding his best. But no they def aren’t better sonically speaking.

I honestly have no idea how you pick a Top 5 for Stevie Wonder. It feels impossible. This track stays on repeat for me and I still can’t say it’s Top 5 unequivocally. shyt, you could argue it’s not even Top 3 on that damn album. :damn:

Now that you say it like that, I'm wrong.

Characters is definitely his worst joint, I don't really count anything before Music of My Mind but if I did a couple of those joints aren't as strong as HTJ also.

I think Secret Plants of Life is highly slept on though, he got some sleepers on there for real.
