Stillmatic wasn't given 5 mics because of The Blueprint. Stillmatic stood on its own merit due to the following:
- it wasn't just a comeback, it was seen as a return to form
- "Takeover" was supposed to be the death blow to Nas's career, but Nas managed to bounce back
- some of the best songs Nas ever made are on Stillmatic
This wasn't them just awarding an album just because. This was an album that really had an impact that reached beyond just the beef. It's an album that truly fit the definition of a classic as it really was one of those must have, essential albums that was a moment in Hip Hop. Was it Illmatic level? No, but this album occupied its own space and time. It reminded fans of what made Nas one of the best in the first place. He gained new fans and in the process silenced many of his naysayers.
Dude really penned a story backwards in which he changed the syntax of the sentences fit the concept and the story still made sense. Then there's "2nd Childhood", which is a brilliant song. There's songs like "You're Da Man" and "One Mic" and especially "One Mic" because he experiments with pitch and the intensity of the lyrics is amplified by going from him talking to him nearly screaming. The music also changes with his voice. "Stillmatic Intro" is one of the craziest intros ever. There's "Ether", which is one of the best disses ever. To me, "What Goes Around" was the icing on the cake. The bonus song, "Every Ghetto" has two of the best verses he ever spit.

This would be relevant if we were discussing what it got in XXL or Vibe. Furthermore, a high score from XXL and Vibe never held as much weight as the mic system. Even when The Source was deemed irrelevant, XXL and Vibe were giving out perfect ratings, nobody complained about Kim getting a perfect rating from them but much focus was applied to the 5 mic Source review.

Which has nothing to do with what Stilllmatic did or didn't get. I would give BP and Stillmatic classic ratings for differing reasons. And Vibe isn't exactly a Hip Hop magazine. It gave out discs (their version of mics) to albums that weren't Hip Hop albums where The Source rated those in the alternative section without giving out mics.

alot of the album doesnt center around jay z though, only ether. personally i dont care much for the song and to me, its impact even kinda cheapens the fact that the album is a return to form for nas after a couple lackluster projects. its definitely one of my most listened to albums ever. as a teen it played a big part in my becoming a hiphop fan.

I was just running this back last week and it's an easy classic in my eyes. Nas was spitting on this, great production, Nas showed a lot of creativity on this. Had a couple of weak tracks but still a classic in my eyes.

its a classic because of so many factors but i can't listen to it now and feel that its one of the greatest albums ever made.
half of it is incredible but theres too many straight up forgettable songs to be that.
couldn't tell me shyt at the time though...this album made 13 year old me a full fledged stan.
putting that album on for the first time in my silver Sony Walkman..that Intro beat slapped me harder than the icy wind could.
