Just get a satchel, carrying a bookbag just feels too childish, imo. But we are talking about different settings, I carry a bag for school because I have literal books and heavy stuff in there, but for what you are getting at, a satchel is best, especially if you go out and about like that.I carry my laptop, tablet and lotion and wallet.
Chapstick goes in my front pockets along with my keys and phone.
I keep the back free for my pocket knife

If you are using the bag for work it's fine, I use one for school, but I wouldn't go out to random places with a bookbag. Bookbags are functional, imo, if the items aren't heavy, I don't see the point in wearing one when a satchel is available. We are talking about two different scenarios, which is why the idea of carrying a bookbag around sounded crazy to me.
And no, a satchel isn't a purse, at least not in the style I'm thinking of.If you consider that a purse, then w/e, rather a purse then walking around like I'm in gradeschool again.
