This is what's wrong with Hip Hop today, business-wise.
These bloggers and sites throwing out these fake numbers on how much cats signed for and all that, giving the impression that they're being paid this money. Don Cannon spoke on this recently. It's common knowledge, but he said these amounts are not what cats are getting, it's what labels promise to invest in you over a certain amount of years. Which means, "we'll pay this amount for your travel, recording, promotion, marketing, styling, production, media training, etc. over the next 4-5 years".
What's not being noted, is that this is a loan. You have to recoup all of that back within that term, just to break even! And if you're in a 360, which is what all these dudes sign into these days, you're in even more debt, because they're takin' half of your own profits from you, just for signing you.
I don't even like his music, but cats Like Mac Miller are winnin', because they've taken their careers into their own hands. He's paying for distribution, and seein' all the rest of the bread for himself! Cats need to leave these labels alone, if they can't get decent deals out of them.
