Anybody can be racist. And many people are whether they realize it or not. Racism (belief that your race is superior) in and of itself is not a problem. Having an extreme view and acting on said belief and treating other people like they are beneath you (refusing housing or service, assualting, marginalizing, or following them around in their own neighborhood and confronting and killing them for no reason) is the real problem. You don't have to be a certain color or of a certain status to be racist or do racist things. That said the more money, influence, or years of institutional support your racism has behind it, the more problematic it can be. It is rather humorous/disturbing how so many people fail to understand the difference between the words or actions of a random person and the words or actions of a person with the level of influence and responsbility that Sterling has.

Do black people on the East Coast really use the word 'honkie' or 'paleface'?
I've heard black people call whites a lot of things (including the classic midwestern 'peckerwood'), but in a confrontation it was usually a storm of 'motherfukkers' and 'b*stards' with 'white' and an occasional 'p*ssy' or 'dirty' attached.
I agree with you about the term 'racism' being applied to whites only being a leftist college invention. This is the first thread I've seen where that particular definition was actually explained articulately, though. I'm impressed with the first page of posters, though I don't agree with them. Anyone can be a racist.
Having said that, talking to white people -- particularly white men -- about racism is an exercise in futility. I don't think white men realize that -- for some of us hearing the tapes -- it was a very uncomfortable flashback to everyday conversations. Personally, I've found that if you engage white men in conversations outside of their comfort zone, they are very prone to attacking one's intelligence, one's sincerity, one's life experiences as invalid and/or inferior. They must always be right. Whatever they believe, is what they define as 'rational', therefore everyone else is wrong and irrational. I've listened to white men on the radio express surprise all week about professional black people's reactions to the Sterling tape, not least Michael Jordan. They sound completely flabbergasted, in the 'I never knew they thought that way' kind of way. If they really knew these people, they would not only know, but understand why. I think part of it has to do with the privilege of thinking themselves individuals and everyone else part of a group.
They are the push button djs who don't see themselves in Paris Hilton, and have redefined true djing as 'turntabling', to borrow from an old thread. Seeing themselves in Paris Hilton -- or, in this case, Donald Sterling -- is a revelation too far.

It's funny, right up until the point where folks re-read their Bibles, and re-read traditional Jewish thoughts on non-Jews (or turn on the television and watch whatever Israel is happening to do at the moment). It might be too big to see, or too simple to see.
I did find it funny that, on some of the Israeli sites, Israeli Jews were claiming that Donald Sterling wasn't a real Jew because he's like the rest of American Jews with the name change and the lax observance of Judaic teaching.

White people were discriminated, they just weren't defined as white at the time of that discrimination ;) With time, the Irish, the Italian, the different Slavic peoples, the Nordics (!), they all became 'white', they all became 'Anglo', and the institutional discrimination against their ethnic group ebbed down until it was nothing but the memory of a fart and a relic of movies made through the end of World War II.
