Student Loans shouldn't be forgiven. We should focus on cost.

College educated millennials used their political capital to leverage something that dispaorptionately benefits them, just like other groups do, if the working class resent it so much and think it's so unfair then they can bush the Dems later on. The unfairness arguments are weak when you look at politics as a game, fairness is not relevant at that point. If you don't like the way the game is played, vote and make it a priority to change the incentives.

I've been reading a lot about trends in United States, a couple of issues come to the forefront. One we have an issue with fertility rates and marriage rates they are currently at the lowest lowest levels in USA history. Secondly, this is forcing household formation to take longer to achieve thus causing problems to the USA GDP. I think the government will have to do something regarding college prices and loans that were taken out due to these two issues. I think the USA is going to offer free community college and push for lower prices on tuition due lack of an educated population.

They need this and bullet trains. No one wants to live in shytty burbs.

Fairness is hammered into people politically:yeshrug:
Fair wage, pay their fair share in taxes, etc.
It’s going to be hard to turn now and say who cares if its not fair/fairness doesn’t matter.
Better to just include something for those who feel shafted.

Nah, it depends. If the people who feel shafted are just being petty then you can politically afford to ignore their grievances. I think some portions of the working class will get in their feelings over this policy, but they'll likely get over it. If they really in their feelings they can go vote. Isn't that the message that Millenials have been given? Stop crying and go vote? Well, this is what millennials asserting their political leverage looks like.

The men and women who enlisted in order to take advantage of the G.I. Bill arent being petty IMO...:manny:
I think we should just make public colleges free going forward.

The arguments for debt forgiveness are simply too weak.

Those who enlisted are an obvious outlier group, and my statement regarding pettiness is geared towards people who either a) never had student loans, to begin with, b) those who have already paid them off. Again I'll reiterate if folks feel so strongly about it they generally have agency byway of voting. Further, they have contempt for those with loans so I think it's appropriate when they are met with the same contempt.

But the moral grandstanding is weak and shallow and I think has more to do with people feeling as though they are losing social capital more than feelings of unfairness. The schadenfreude that the student loan crisis has provided for the working class will take a major hit, thus my reaction for their brittle internal narratives taking a hit is :yeshrug:

Agreed, but I agree with some opponents of the proposal, who believe the $1.6 trillion it will cost can be spent in better ways that benefit a larger portion of society, and a higher percentage of disenfranchised tax payers.
I think current debt holder should honor their contracts and public colleges should be free moving forward.

The problem with student loans is the interest. I’d be fine with waiving interest for all federal student loans, especially during the first 3-5 years after graduation where most people are deferring payments.
The interest is insane. If you have an income driven repayment plan which a fukkton of borrowers do you’re not even paying enough to cover the interest that accrues.

instead of working toward a realistic goal like cutting interest to zero and knocking off part of everyone's loan, they're pushing this bullshyt about forgiveness that isnt gonna go anywhere

the arguments against forgiveness are easy, but its pretty hard to argue against making interest zero and knocking 10k off everyone's balance

I think there are plenty of good arguments to eliminate it completely, the entire student loan setup is borderline criminal. But you may be correct in eliminating it completely being a pipe dream, especially in America. I’m fine with half measures to make it easier to pay off. I agreed to a bunch of shyt when I was really young and pressured into college. I seriously did not understand what I was getting into and most borrowers would agree. The fact that American citizens have to go into massive debt before they’ve even begun adult life to get an education is ridiculous. At this point most borrowers will be paying on their loans the rest of their life. You have to choose, do I just make minimum payments so my credit doesn’t get ruined or do I try to pay them down and sacrifice liquidity for my other monthly debts. Where does this lead for retirement savings??? We really fukked an entire generation,

So forgiving student loans isn't fair to the people who had to pay theirs back, but removing interest and knocking off a portion is fair to the people who had to pay back their full amount with interest. :patrice:

no, it still isnt. but its a far more realistic measure that has more chance of passing :yeshrug:

i think if we knocked off interest to 0, and cut everyones balance in half, it would get manageable for most people. the average student loan debt is 30k :yeshrug:

and if people have already paid 30, the average person should have it forgiven
