A lot of this is Nintendo's fault for lack of marketing. I've told a few of my friends I'm getting a Wii U with the new Mario game and they asked "what's a Wii U?" They didn't even know it existed. I've seen that Just Dance commercial like 15 times but I never see any Wii U commercials.

Wii U marketing may be the #1 problem here. Can't sell something people aren't aware of.

The install base on the Wii U is pathetic. Its gonna take more than one good game to turn their fortunes around.
Thats it in a nutshell. Literally the best mario ever cant do it.

Mario
Zeld
Kart
Smash bros
Metroid
Donkey kong
Party

At some point brehs you need something more to entice spending $300...especially considering the ds..3d has the same shyt and people felt burnt by wii over time.

How much longer before Nintendo gives up on making consoles and making games for other systems?

This has to be their last system right?
What if they continue to make profits as they have in the last few generations and the 3DS continues to carry them? Why wouldn't they try again?

I don't see them getting out of the hardware business ever. They would fold first. I mean, these guys have been making hardware to play their games since before famicom...game and watch and whatnot.

I bolded that to emphasize that they make hardware that they need to support their next wave of software...and thats their #1 focus...even to spite 3rd party developers. N64's controller and cartridge base was selected strictly because of how it would support mario, zelda, and other 1st party games. Wiiu and its pad too.

they'll fold before they develop for another console i believe.

You'd be surprised. Nintendo might end up outlasting both Sony and Microsoft (especially Microsoft) as gaming companies.

Here's the odd thing about Microsoft: There are some very vocal important shareholders that want MS to get out of the games business. In my opinion it's a dumb idea and they're being shortsighted but it doesn't mean they don't hold power. In addition, Xbox 360 was very strong in North America but not nearly as strong worldwide. So far PS4 doesn't look like it's poised to lose any of that marketshare worldwide and it does in fact seem to be gaining marketshare in NA. Those two factors coupled together, could mean that Microsoft has a lot more fighting to do in the future if they want to keep their gaming division. Meanwhile, Nintendo shareholders don't want them to get out of hardware. As of right now, it's still a big money maker and going software only would reduce revenue dramatically. Nobody's future is truly safe.
