This movie is going to do well. I think after nearly 20 years of bored a$$hole superman I think people will like to see a version of the character that feels relatable and interesting.
By showing superman getting beaten up and needing help, he's adding the suspense that has been missing. One of the biggest criticisms of superman is that hes a boring hero that has so many powers and so few weaknesses that people don't care because he's never in any real danger.
He wants to invert that and make a superman movie where you feel bad for him at times and actually WANT him to get up and keep trying after he gets knocked down. A version of the character that doesn't give up and keeps fighting even when it seems like he doesn't have a chance of winning. He's supposed to represent the absolute best side of humanity. Someone who gets upset at the fact that he has power and can save people but it's impossible to be everywhere at once. Someone who can be hated but still want to do the right thing because he can't live with himself knowing he was in a position to save lives and he didn't. Superman is supposed to represent hope. I never felt ANY sense of hope from the Snyder superman.
