sounds crazy. Where would they have gotten the money anyway? Income redistribution?
Print money, make companies pay higher taxes to pay off the never ending interest.

Money's not the issue indeed, its redistribution/paying tax evasion (Panama Papers and all that)

There's been talk of UBI in Belgium since the 80s. Money's not the issue in Western Europe.

Exactly.

So why not just literally give you cash in the form of basic income?

Because people are more likely to use these services for their intended purpose rather than what you suggested. They are more likely to misuse or unwisely spend a lump sum of cash.

they don't want their country flooded with filthy low-class immigrants. damn, those 99% have to ruin it for the other 1% eh? they'd go broke not cause of the UBI,but because of the border patrol, lol

hurting themselves for the greater good, very noble.

You guys realize its deeper than just 2500 a month or.... Lazy immigrants or people not deserving it... Its an existential argument about the evolution of society.

I think the vast majority in this thread have spoken about automation more than anything, which adds quite the wrinkle to the argument.

"If you would offer every individual a Swiss amount of money, you would have billions of people who would try to move into Switzerland." :mjpls:

In other words, if you broke and colored.............:mjpls:

I'd be ok with a basic income system which replaces the social programs like Medicaid, Food stamps, public housing etc.

Everyone gets 2500 a month to do whatever they want with
nope. thats because you trust most people will do the right thing with it. some will some wont. and what happens to the kids of the parents who dont? are you willing to let them not come to the emergency room when their parents spend up the money on something else and not on the early doctor visits so they can find that their child has a health problem? if you say they can come into the emergency room. how's that going to be paid for? thru tax dollars. thats back to where we started again. unless you're willing to leave people out of the emergency room scenario. than you might as well leave the social programs in place and still give people a basic income at the lower levels.

I don't Though. Let them make their own decisions with the money and if they fail they fail. You can't save everyone

For the record, I don't agree with a basic income in principal. However if it's a choice between that and the system we have no I'd rather everyone just get a check.

2500 a month? They would have to be mentally challenged to approve this......or a complete bum looking to leech off the system.

You bring up a very great point about how far this new system will go in terms of providing welfare.

Will the UBI be something that is an additional program on top of the current social welfare programs or will it replace all of them?

If it replaces everything, what will society do when people misappropriate their funds?

the Swiss want their cake and to eat it too

high cost of housing/housing shortage

overall high cost of living

want migrant labor but not new citizens or new people really living in the country even

don't want to or can't pay a sustainable wage to workers

:dead:

I'm honestly curious where different countries stand in Europe in terms of class mobility because it seemed almost laughably strict when I was there.
