A lot of these commercials are farmed out to an agency who is working on 50 different assignments and they put together these activations quickly. A lot are managed and/or ideated by 20 or 30-something middle class white women who haven't really experienced the world outside of their Instagram explore page.

They probably thought it'd be a nice play on words jeans/genes, not understanding the historical subtext. Not caping, because in marketing you need to know these things, but we're being exposed to more people who don't have the education or honestly even the intellectual curiosity to ask if there is some greater context.
We agree. I personally don’t think it was intentional but it wasn’t a smart decision. People pointing out the eugenics aspect of it are right. The people making a mountain out of a mole hill are wrong but that’s the internet and American Eagle (and Sweetney to be fair) have to own that, hence why they pulled it.

-The ad generates controversy
-Influencers online amplify the ad
-Other influencers farm the outrage for views.
-enough time passes and everyone moves on. If that doesn't happen, the company gives a lukewarm "apology".

Rinse and repeat. This is how advertising works in America now. Millions of dollars in free advertising is being generated and the company saves money on its budget.

Eventually they won't even need to pay an actress like Sydney Sweeney and they'll just use an AI generated model who looks similar or better. We are way past the point of outrage. The nazis are here, they're gutting the welfare state. Now is the time to use mutual aid to make up for the things that will be removed, and ways to defend ourselves with force for when they eventually start coming for everyone else.

I agree with others who have said this is way more about certain women being losers than anything else. If you want to make a large segment of chicks mad, highlight a conventionally attractive woman in a major ad or film. They been hating on this chick for a long time now. She's in shape, blonde, white....and they're mad.

I'm glad we're moving away from the nonsensical body positivity of having 300 pound models in Gatorade ads and jean ads. It was always bullshyt driven by super-online activist women who shouldn't be dictating advertising. A hot woman in jeans talking about cars is gonna do more to sell your shyt.
