Her dad is Muslim and her mom is Christian. She might have practiced when she was young. She is a transplant from STL, raised in Jersey.

Yep. I just read an article that is much shorter than the original one I read and more recent and she says what you are saying. Also said she practiced heavily for years even wore a hijab but after 911 felt isolated and uncomfortable about beong Muslim around so many Jews. Says she will eventually go back to wearing a hijab but continues to practice with her dad. Says for 2 yrs she tried to be sexy but it wasnt real... I guess those pics posted are from her 'sexy' stage.

I'm surprised that the Wu hasnt said anything about her calling herself SZA. Isn't that a violation?
They aren't orginal themselves. Taking their whole image from Karate movies. Fair game :yeshrug: They not even the first group to do that theme. The Poison Clan is the first group I heard to use those Karate themes on their album.

LOOOOOOOOOL at you for believing that. She has been exposed as being a hoodrat with mad niccas under her belt YEARS ago

I'm actually :dead: at this

She's the epitome of this (my) generation. Fake weird. Trying to be different for the sake of being 'different'. Which is why she can and will switch up because this 'differentness' is not attached to any part of her core personality and is nothing more than marketing

I really dont know why yall nikkas hate on this girl so much.... Yall sound like some hoes.
Anyway she is nothing like Tinashe. The only similarity between Tinashe and SZA is they are both females, and that's where it ends.. Other than that, no similarities.

SZA has a strong female & male base.. she got the shae butter "woke" females, and the wanna-be different hipster females... she got the nikkas off the strength she is attractive. Also her music is dope (haven't heard her most recent shyt).

If anything I'd understand you comparing her to Janelle Monae... cause she's a lot of hype, and a lot of fake "woke" females listen to her... but the difference bewtween SZA and Janelle is... SZA got some dope songs... Janelle's music is TRASH. Everyone knows it, but for some reason nobody says it.
Im cool with everything in your post except for the bolder. Electric Lady was a 100% dope ass album to me. Not gonna say Janelle got all these classics but her music is dope for the most part.

Somebody make that thread.

Janelle needs to find her own sound, electric lady was a mashup of her spins on other people's music.
Label manufactured = hits...that's what you need to be relevant. Her hits paired with being attractive (men pay attention) and her style (women follow) made HER matter. Kelis had a dope image but not the hits to warrant being followed. Rih's music is also crossover, it's not purely r&b. What went so right is GGGB, that album dominated charts for damn near 18 months spawning multiple hits that made her unavoidable.
So what went right was image + she was mainly a pop artist + GGBG

The hits = label
The look = Stylists
The simps = irrelevant, they don't buy the music.

The industry is different today, fragmented listening habits make it hard to transcend, add in the fact you get so much more noise from all the ways artists can get on. While people complain about the industry politics, that closed system of the past presented more polished artists and made people super stars, not just someone with "a buzz"

That's a good point. There seemed to be real artist development then.

Plus is harder to gauge what a buzz is nowadays. Youtube views and social media stats are mirages usually. Artists get picked up for these then dropped w/ no proper development if it doesn't translate. It's fukked up.
Rihanna has/had HOV vote. Either that or sucked some cacs right? That's what the coli says right? Lmfao
Completely forgot about that. He was on umbrella too.

She dont look better than tinashe
She cant sing that much better than tinashe
She cant dance better than than tinashe
She dont have a hit as big as tinashe

If tinashe cant make, she aint gonna make it.

For whatever reason its tough for black women right now. And they making some great music.

But meanwhile Miley Cyrus below talent having ass is a huge star.
Black women are behind SZA way more than Tinashe. Tinashe doesn't know who she's singing for

I loved Janelle's Android phase. Personal reason stop me from supporting her now but I used to be a big fan. She doesnt at all remind me of SZA tho.

The Shea Butter/different lane is essentially a mainstream marketing gimmick in hip-hop/r&b nowadays.

Beyoncé started this brand of PR pop star who project an image instead of actually being an image. Swag is the only thing that sells in any arena. Nothing about the stars of yesteryear was forced they just were who they were and that's what people liked about them. Even Ye gets mad passes because we know that he's actually being himself. This cac way of doing things is gonna have to die sooner or later or else we are all doomed.Be Yourself brehs.

Can't. Black woman checking in and we consider Tinashe just as black as Kehlani. Of course I'm just speaking for my friends but we buy music, go to concerts, and have debates for hours on new music. We're also in LA so we hear a slew of stuff first. She (Tinashe) does not have a loyal large BLACK girl fan base. The very best she could do is pull a Zendaya and speak up about her light skinned privilege. That'll gain her some. I know for a fact most of my friends are SZA fans because she is brown skinned woman and has kinky hair. Something that isn't popping enough. I bought the album merely off that and Love Galore

THIS

ive been saying since day one.

tinashe is Christina milan 2.0

she just doesn't have the appeal to black females. she better get into acting, and do the music on the side.

As boneheaded as Top Dawg is, even if he was more like LA Reid he still would not be able to make her a star. LA Reid himself could not make her a star. I'm telling you guys i dont wanna be a broken record and repeat their names but the two women running the game right now stop things like that from happening. which is not hate on them btw... you cant help that and its not your fault you are that big

all i can see is if these two women decide to make their own labels and start trying to push Black R&B female artists as their proteges and heir to the thrones or even Black pop artists.

We have had Black male rappers or singers do this but women almost never do the protege thing...u notice that? :mjpls:

and also there is a rumor out there taylor swift's upcoming album is gonna be R&B influenced..yes u read that right taylor swift. again just a rumor but imagine when that happens and how annoying the industry gets pushing that and it gets even that much harder for women like SZA

SZA should say fukk it and sign to Roc Nation. Top Dawg is an idiot and still runs his label like he is in the streets.

A man who actually robbed a KFC and was about to kill Kendrick's dad over chicken cannot be counted on for rational decisions.

nah, I'm not saying she could be a crossover pop star. I'm not even interested in that, and that's the problem with the industry actually.
most r&b consumers, much like hip-hop consumers have been disenfranchised. the real reason music stopped selling.
beyonce is the top entertainer of the times, but theres tons upon tons of r&b consumers that don't care for what shes selling.
same for rihanna, who isn't an r&b artist to begin with. she just gets pushed into that category now because shes black and theres not much else out there.
and yea, I do blame them breh. at least beyonce, who is notorious for pulling strings behind the curtain. just like her husband.

theres definitely room in the game for a lot more chicks. they don't have to be pop stars.

I havnt heard enough SZA to assess her potential, but she has 1 or 2 songs that should be heating up radio right now.

btw, I only checked her out because of this thread. I never paid her any mind because of the whole TDE thing. just being hyped up by a bunch of guys on the internet who could care less about r&b is an automatic turnoff. that tinashe epidemic in full force.

nah, a lot of the stars of yesteryear had forced personas.

starting all the way at the top of the food chain with whitney Houston.
and apparently Mariah carey as well.

the thing is, there wasn't as much scrutiny on them because there was so much going on. plus, there were less media outlets pulling back the curtain.
