Congrats to her. Was gonna check it out but saw it had a whopping 64 songs I was like I'm good

I just don't have the attention span to sit though an album that long...

you couldn't recoup a 10 million dollar budget by selling 5 million albums back in the 90s. NO way in hell a platinum streaming album recoup that now :russ: . Once again, labels are going to make their money back regardless, it's the labels' job to keep the artist in the red. As Evidence once put it, "The difference between an indie and a major label is with a major label, you get a lot of money up front and no money in the future. On an indie, you get a little money up front and no money in the future". She'll make money touring, but she aint breaking even with the label. hell no. De la soul has sold millions of records/singles for Tommy Boy on very small budgets, but Tom Silverman claims they've never recouped anything in 30+ years. How the f*k does that make any sense?
I've worked at a major. The huge differences is now it costs less to make albums and distribution costs far less. You aren't shipping half a million copies to stores, you aren't paying super producers massive up and back side amounts, you aren't dealing with "uncollected amount" withholdings (basically when the label claims they shipped x amount of albums to a store that closed down before it could sell the albums), and singles and non-singles are generating more sales money due to streaming which hells you recoup faster. There were a lot of hit records in the 90s and 00s that didn't go plat because no one bought the actual single.

The contracts are better in many cases today and there are fewer expenses. That's not to say everyone is doing well or that no one is getting fukked. If you're signing to a rapper's label today you're getting fukked (see: Meek). TDE has traditionally elbowed their way into some surprisingly good major label deals. I can't speak on her RCA deal but given how good the Interscope deals are for Kendrick and Q, I expect that she's good. The only real fear is that when you sell like she's sold on these last two albums, the label wants to re-negotiate. More up front money for more debt.

as far as music poppin, cuz there are some folks popular for social media and other antics like chloe

tier 1a - sza
tier 1b - summer and jhene (wouldn't be mad if someone said she's tier 2)
tier 2 - khelani, her
tier 3 - ella, ari, syd, chloe
tier 4 - queen naija, danileigh, justine skye, amber mark, mariah the scientist, normani etc

the pawg & b singers are all prolly tier 3/4, and i probably forgot some names - there's so many inconsistent singers like mahalia, and jorja smith
SZA is on pace to have the 3rd biggest streaming week ever behind only Drake and Taylor Swift

SZA is more like tier 0

Any huge artist who released 20 versions of the same album could've done Taylor numbers. The difference is they wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the positive responses from The Booth.

Drake doesn't even bother releasing physicals anymore because he knows his fans don't buy shyt. Same goes for Bad Bunny

Adele was the only one capable of doing what Taylor did and she didn't come close. Her cassettes, vinyls, CD's etc are still in stores collecting dust

I’ve always thought …You know first week ‘sales’ are suspect when they can call it on the Sunday after a Friday release

So? I’m talking about how these women rank in the space of r&b, how their core audience feels about them. SZA has more crossover reach but I don’t care if she got more white and Asian girls listening to her. Ranking the r&b chicks within the scope of how their music hits with their audience, that’s pretty much how it’s seen.

She a lil too self loathing for me

It's like you're blessed with a music career...enjoy it and believe that you deserve it...embrace the shyt.

But I guess the people highest up got the lowest self ---...yall know how it goes.

Adele sold 692,000 copies (pure sales) without having 20 different versions of the same album. You're telling me that she couldn't clear 1.5 million had 30 been 20 different versions?

This is facts but Meek has yet to show us that’s he’s been fukked by a label.

TI letting him out his contract and Ross signing him changed his life forever

He’s crying because he’s a free agent and not getting the offers he thinks he commands
