I'm going to post my summary/impression of the audio, because I know everyone is going to react to the headline without listening to it.

  • It isn't just Punch, it's Rob (who produced on "damn near everything" on the album, and is also SZA's audio engineer) who will give feedback on what parts of a song/songs need to remain and what need to be cut.
  • SZA says that some of the twitter favorites don't show up on the album because Punch says they've already been leaked/out for years, or some songs sound too alike.
  • SZA says at the end that tracklisting/sequencing is one of her biggest weaknesses, and that Punch is an expert at tracklisting. SZA says she views herself as a storyline, and can't really string together storylines for her albums.

She got 23 songs on her album, most being 2-3 mins, what songs did he force you to keep long and songs did he force off…shut the fukk up.

The Punch SZA publicity beef angle is so fukking annoying, they got a hit album on their hands but keep the negative spin as part of their promo :why:

Sounds like standard A&R/Management work to me. Not every artist is a genius who has a top to bottom vision for their albums.

I could see Jay Rock being similar with allowing Punch or someone within TDE to regulate tracklistings and sequencing.

Kendrick and Ab-Soul more than likely dictate their work from end to end. Especially Kendrick. His work always comes across as a singular creative vision.

Schoolboy Q could go either way.

That south Detroit song wouldn't fit on the album and isn't that good to be more than a skit tbh. Put that shyt as a bonus track.

Joni didn't need to be on the album cause it was put out for years ago indeed and didn't hit like I hate you which was the one that caught on. Joni could have just been a street single cause the full song is already out.!

With that said Punch said in his Math Hoffa interview he tells the artist to blame him for things like this but he doesn't ever hold an artist back. I'm sure he helped her sequence this album and it was already too long, everything couldn't make it lol. She just didn't want to be the one to tell her fans that everything couldn't make it lol.

I imagine that's probably the case for a lot of rappers starting out, especially back in the day. First album more curated by a third-party and then they start expanding their own vision. Like with Nas for example, I imagine with Illmatic Large Pro and MC Serch probably had a bigger hand in getting it all together, and then It Was Written was more himself
