The other elements of the culture are ignored to the point where it's only rap that's dissected and the other art forms and aspects of the culture take a backseat. Not only that, but people allow them to pimp the culture by looking to everything outside of the culture to dictate what's hot. Prime example, The Grammys, MTV, etc. not mattering, but there's outrage over who wins the awards and who performs. Nobody is forced to watch.
