So im talking with my neighbor(who is a white cop) about police reform today and he made some good arguments... figured I'd share an interesting one.
2-3 people are killed by police everyday, every year... most of whom are white, but its not even obvious that that's a bad number considering there are 300+ million. What is the expectation? what is an acceptable number? 0-1 a day? why? based on what?
Where does the idea that all the crime in a giant ass country should result in people never being killed come from?
...he also says not resisting arrest in would likely cut the number of deaths in half, but its easier to blame the officer than it is the person creating the hostile and/or unsafe situation.
Thoughts?
Edit: He voted for Trump last election and says he is staying home this election.
The bolded...
The problem is the cops are the authority figures. They expect and demand to be in control but have the obscene notion that the person they are arresting would and should be compliant. In a hectic situation, its the authority figure's responsibility to BE the cooler head and de-escalate. If a child and a parent were having a squabble, you wouldn't expect the child to be the calm and collected one while the parent loses their shyt and lashes out, would you?
Of course not, that would be an abuse of power by the parent and that typically gets punished. There is very little the child can do to the parent in almost any situation outside of being a headache to deal with, but that's part of the job of being a parent. Extend that same mentality to Cops and Civilians...
In a tense situation between a cop and a civilian, it would be ridiculous to expect the civilian to be the calmer head, if at all over the cop because the cop is the authority figure and the one with the power and control. If the cop abuses that power and lashes out, they should be punished to the same extent a child abuser should be. The only exception to this idea IMO is when the civilian is hostile and armed, but that still doesn't warrant anything beyond equal force.
Most cops want the power and authority that come with the job but not the risk and hassles, and honestly if thats the case, they aren't cut out for the job. Also most cop lifers LIVE for the thrills of the job. They actively want people to resist at times because it gives them an opportunity to flex the power and authority the signed up for the job for. Things will never improve until cops are honest about the job and own up to both sides of being authority figures. I say this as the son of two FBI Agents and with a cousin as a homicide detective.
