Artists are doing that so they (or the label) can save or the manufacturing costs, but just as books, newspapers, and magazines may be struggling, physical copies won't see their death, at least not until my generation (the last raised on physical goods) dies.
Itunes has been the largest retailer for music for a couple of years.They're afraid of the changing market. If too many artists start to do this Target and other retailers like it are going to be missing out on a huge chunk of CD revenue.
Itunes is pretty much going to have the monopoly on first week releases. This is Target's way of protesting that.
