Anyone going to AfroTech this year?
I've heard mixed reviews on it over the years but I figured in this current economy it may be popping attendance and networking wise

I heard it's just a giant turn up event and that last years was terrible. Also the pricing is insane.

I may consider going because I've never been yet and just wanted to check it out.

same I heard. Wasn't sure if it was because it's a black tech event and folks are hating or if it's really just a glorified trap brunch full of stem degrees now

My company used to sponsor a few of the black ERG/Affinity group leaders in the past to go but they cut back on that a year or two ago.

Last year’s event was particularly problematic because a good number of folks on SM broadcast all the social/turn-up stuff and not the actual professional aspects of things.

I saw a few tik-toks where girls were like Afrotech is the place to go find bae etc. And being that it was in Houston, the turn up was heavy. From the outside looking in just seemed like one big party which isn’t a good look.

If you’ve been to these type of professional conferences (NABA, NSBE, etc) then you know people turn up, hook-up in the hotel etc but that’s the quiet part that you don’t say out loud. Seems like some folks didn’t get the memo last year…

I think it’s worth going if your company can sponsor it, if not, idk..

The prices aren't worth it to me. Doesn't seem like a good value.

Funny I used to consider going to this, now I don’t see the merit.

Resume.org: Turmoil ahead for US job market as genAI disruption kicks up waves

Half of US firms have put a freeze on hiring, and a third are eyeing layoffs; high earners without AI skills are most at risk as the fast pace of change reshapes the hiring landscape.

With four-in-10 companies saying they expect to replace workers with AI tools by 2026, the report suggests a major shift is underway — though, given Resume.org’s position in the job search market, the data could reflect a mix of real trends and strategic framing.

The tech job market is feeling the shake-up, according to Kara Dennison, head of Career Advising at Resume.org. Pandemic over-hiring, AI disruption, and shifting consumer needs are forcing companies to recalibrate. “We’ve seen big waves of layoffs, mostly because companies over hired during the pandemic and are now adjusting to rapid changes driven by AI and shifting consumer needs,” Dennison said.

While they say this, it’s important to keep in mind:

Many companies are over leveraged with their cloud and AI infrastructure, and that’s clearly eating up a lot of capital relative to the potential pay offs.

That’s not to downplay the productivity gains but it’s also important to remember that AI expenses in the short to midterm will continue to rise. I doubt OpenAI will keep a free tier forever. The prompt-to-compute ratio isn’t fully priced in yet. It’s the same old playbook: subsidize adoption, then roll out the real costs later.

On top of that, we can’t ignore the role of H1B visas and offshoring in regards to reshaping the job market. It’s not that jobs don’t exist, they’re just being done overseas at a fraction of the cost.

@JT-Money i know you got some stories like this :wow:

I’ve worked various data adjacent roles in different industries during my career. Offshoring always ticks up when the business starts dealing with uncertainty in the market or some sort of economic downturn. Many of my previous companies used at least a small cohort of offshore resources and some even had entire teams that were offshored.

Eventually the result becomes the same. Either the offshore quality drops due to conditions in their own country deteriorating or individual resource quality drops enough that something triggers a management 5-Alarm fire drill trying to fix offshores output. It’s a boom and bust cycle.

The weirdest situation a company of mine dealt with (at least that I was privy to) was we had a group of offshore resources that worked at a shared office location in their country. The main analyst freaked out, suddenly quit, formed his own company, and poached the entire staff of his original team leaving only the “manager” for that team. The guy pretended everything was fine for 2 weeks and told nobody that he was soloing all this work. During that two weeks, he fukked up some report for management that made the corporate metrics look absolutely dogshyt which triggered an analytics all hands meeting to figure out what was happening. Offshore “manager” joined remotely and when leadership asked to see the rest of the team, he just said,” what team? They all quit. It’s just me.” The next month or so the analysts across the company were helping do interviews to get more onshore talent.[\quote]

I've seen worse, much worse. Most people would be shocked by the greed and corruption that goes on at the average company.
:wow:

In cybersecurity we get to know where all the bodies are buried. I was on the chopping block for a layoff once. They took my name off the list. After realizing I knew too much and might snitch.

Afro Tech was in Oakland a few years back and I happened to be in town and walked past as it was going, then it moved to Austin where I live and I also didn’t attend (maternity leave). As a hater, I’m skeptical of its actual value and meaning for Black people in Tech relative to the price but do see its potential value if there was more than vibes. When I read events and the day stuff it didn’t seem like worth nagging my company to buy me a ticket. They want clients, which I can snag but if people are on more of a leisure/“social” time then can’t really justify it.

Welp I might end up inspiring change in my department or get let go for doing so.

I told them I didn't appreciate them blocking my shyt as I still have the interview tomorrow and they needed to fix it. Now I still get the interview, but also a meeting next week of why I'm unhappy.
