How AI Is Changing White-Collar Work

AI is coming for our jobs

And it’s not just the macroeconomic data that’s concerning. Individual companies are scaling back hiring too. Professional services firm PwC announced a 33% decrease in entry-level hires, citing rapid technological change. Not to be outdone, online marketplace Fiverr announced a 30% workforce reduction in order to become “AI-first.” Worst of all, the nation’s 15 largest tech companies have collectively reduced hiring of new grads by 50% since 2019.

The Next Trump Immigration Rule Aiming To Restrict H-1B Visas

The Trump administration plans to publish a new H-1B rule expected to propose additional immigration restrictions on how employers use the visa and who qualifies for it.

On January 21, 2022, the Biden administration announced new guidance that encouraged more employers and high-skilled foreign nationals to use the O-1A visa category and national interest waivers.

After the new guidance, O-1A applications rose from 7,710 in FY 2021 to 10,010 in FY 2023, and the approval rate remained above 90%. There is no annual limit on O-1A visas.

I mean this is what tech did to a lot of other industries.

5 person teams became one or two person teams with the expertise of 5.

It’s just weird how gleeful a lot of these upper management types are

The folks in tech with families depending on them gotta be out the range anxious as fucck. This is some nerve racking sh1t
The key is to have FU Money already saved up in preparation for layoffs. These tech layoffs have been going non-stop since 2022. I've dodged every last layoff so many but sooner or later everyone gets got.

Engineers demanding equity and $200k+ salaries only has so much shelf life on it. Looks like the end is closer than anticipated:beli:

Joe Biden’s ex advisor Ajay Bhutoria warns of L-1 visa abuse amid H-1B crackdown

On a recent podcast, Bhutoria recounted a visit three years ago to a major shoemaking facility, where he observed an Indian IT company running a large project. He noted that many of the workers onsite were using B-1 visas, which are intended solely for short-term business visits.

Got terminated on 9/15.

I work in adtech. Was working for a DSP since 2023. Started in sales and then got into an Enablement & Partnerships role. Found a niche running retail media campaigns and quickly made a name for myself as the subject matter in-house. I carved out a revenue stream that wasn't being taken advantage of but was the fastest growing sector at our company. The CEO was funneling the best retail opportunities to me and regularly praising me in monthly stand-up meetings.

This was the first time I have been able to really pave my own lane at a company and I got really good at it. It had never been done before at the job so I created my own processes around it to make it scalable. At one point I was getting bonuses and commissions for hitting certain targets and creating internal and external processes.

Out of nowhere, the CEO of our company caught legal charges and ended up stepping down (there went one of my biggest advocates). Senior employees were leaving or getting terminated in droves, making me one of the more tenured employees. Things were looking up a little but ground was feeling shaky. New leadership rolled in who were fresh and had to learn the company from the ground floor which felt sloppy.

Around July I got pulled into a random meeting from a leadership new hire who told me that she would be altering my role (without my consent) and that effective the 2nd half of the year they would be taking away my bonuses and commissions. Naturally, I got annoyed and tried to stay quiet and keep shyt moving but I let them know that I thought that was a weird way to reward the work I'd been putting in. This new leader was basically coming in and asking me about my process and asking me to meet with her and put the process into her own spreadsheet. This pissed me off because it felt like they were just using me to understand my process and pass it off as their own. Not only that but I was managing the workload effectively. When the new leadership came in they tried to take my process and outsource it to a managed services team in India which slowed shyt down so much and pretty much ruined the whole flow. All of a sudden, media plans that I was strategizing with clients and running without needing to go through all this red tape now required approval from people who didn't even understand how to do this at the level I do.

I got a little possessive over my process and made the mistake of calling it my "proprietary" work. They used that as grounds to terminate me after spying on me by listening in on a call I was having with my coworker.

In the middle of a divorce too. So I was navigating unemployment, divorce, the healthcare open marketplace, and single parenting at this point. Was planning on using the 401k accrued at my latest job to keep me afloat through all this mess until I landed my next gig.

I was already looking for a job prior to getting canned and did 5 interviews at a company that would have been perfect to continue doing what I was doing there somewhere else. After the 5th interview they told me that their whole team thought I was a really strong candidate but "based on their conversations with me, it seemed like had higher aspirations and was seeking a higher role". I was like :dahell: I saw a job description, thought it was a great fit, and you tell me that I didn't get it because you're basically saying I'm overqualified and passing it off like I was saying that in the interviews??

Long story short, I was able to secure a job offer last Thursday for a client of my previous company doing the same thing I'm doing, but on the agency side instead of the tech side making $12,000 more. I also am in the final round with another agency that is also a great looking opportunity. I told them I got this offer and asked when I should hear the final verdict. They are saying end of this week. But the job I accepted wants me to start on the 20th next week. If the offer is good enough I may reneg on the offer I accepted but I also am just grateful to be employed and don't want to mess up this opportunity.

This shyt feels like failing up sometimes it's crazy. Hoping I'm able to make a big impact in this new role and glad to be employed again before insurance premiums go sky high in November.

Thankful to have found a new job so quickly in this job market. Now I don't have to burn that 401k money and can roll it over into my other IRAs.

Also, finally having a solid resume with solid experience and a pretty defined idea of a career path has helped with landing interviews easily. Once I get into an interview, it seems that people are consistently impressed and move me onto future rounds pretty reliably (thank god).

Edit: :ohhh: just realized I'm now finally at long last a 6 figure coli breh. :blessed:!!!
Been stacking them certs too which has helped tremendously.

Nice job, sometimes things work out better even if it seems bad at first. Sounds like something yahoo or ttd would do. Be careful on the agency side too, but typically commerce is the fastest growing and it’s so broad that you can carve out a specialty but you don’t want to over specialized, try to work on other things.

I was thinking this same thing. retail media is like the biggest thing popping right now for a lot of DSPs and brands because of the closed-loop sales attribution so I figured this may be a safe space for a bit but like you said, don't want to pigeonhole myself. I'm skilled in plenty of areas outside of retail but figure this is a lane I can do to accrue significant experience and continuity in my resume.

The funniest part is the agency I accepted the offer from is a client of my last DSP employer so they will still have to deal with me. Gonna be sitting on the other side of the table now like :troll:

Linkedin update coming next week is gonna have people like :ohhh:

typically commerce and pharma are highly valued. Combine the 2 and become even more valuable. What I see now are non endemic brands using retail media so it’s truly an area of growth outside of the cpgs. Are you at a big 3 agency?

The offer I accepted is not one of the big 3s. The accepted role would allow me to manage multi-brands. One of the things that stood out in the final interview was the lady was telling me that she wishes the role paid more, admitting it was a little less than market rate and that she hopes they improve that. I appreciated the transparency there. She also held me over the interview time to ask me who I was as a person and was emphasizing that they don't want people whose whole identity is their work and she was pushing family values and all that. That was a pretty refreshing green flag for me despite the slightly under market payrate.

The other offer I have pending (fingers crossed) is a notable agency that's been around since 1973 that was just acquired by Publicis though so that one I could end up working for a big 3 company. During the interviews one of the guys was talking about it and he seemed kind of bummed about it and said the culture changed when they got acquired and that they are steering people away from remote work and want more in office. But the role I applied for is remote but may be more hybrid come April with it being located in Florida. I think this role would be interesting because it is focused on one brand (Tyson) and I've never had the experience of working with one single brand before. I think earning potential could be higher here but I'm a bit wary of them being acquired by Publicis and how that seems to be coming off in terms of employee morale and strict requirements. But it could be more structured and be a great place to develop as well
