Tell me why my idea is stupid-NBA should get rid of the draft and have to recruit incoming rookies

I'd really have no problem with getting rid of the draft in pro sports. Most people will, just because it is what they are used to. I wouldn't have a problem with rookies coming in as free agents and going from there; obviously the league would have to put in certain salary cap restrictions to compensate for it (or not, fukk it).

First of all, really bad teams in some way or another have to recruit incoming rookies because players and agents try to duck some teams. Doing what you want gives the agent as much power as anyone in any organization. In the NBA where vanity plays more into decisions then anything, that's a dangerous proposition.

Secondly you are operating on a very flimsy premise that players are down to play wherever. Wrong! You mean to tell me that if I'm the top prospect and I grew up a Lakers fan that I'm not gonna do what I have to do I can spend the first 5-9 years of my life on the Lakers regardless of who's on the team?
Certain teams really can't sell you on much as it is. Imagine being a rebuilding team in an undesirable location. What can you offer a prospect besides opportunity he can now apparently get anywhere? Meanwhile Pat Riley can break out his rings and the Bang Bus van and recruiting doesn't look like a tall order.

Dapped because I came in to mention "The Bang Bus".

If we're really real here, I feel like the lions' share of recruitment would depend on what team could front the best Bang Bus
or other fringes like it.

I don't think so. No top player bout to go to the warriors to ride the pine or to Cleveland to go sit behind vets. Cats ain't gonna be on that Kentucky shyt in the league cause they gotta get that second contract.

Yes they will. There are some spots open on both the Warriors and the Cleveland inasmuch as players prove themselves. Many top young players will just bet on themselves and go to the Cavs or Warriors, or some other team in the top half of the NBA. The bottom half of the NBA will get no talent and will virtually never be able to compete for a title a la the English Premier league in soccer. American sports would become unwatcheable.

The Lakers would still have to.want him and if he's that big of a Lakers he'd end up there in fa anyway.

I tend to disagree. I imagine there are many more Laker/Kobe fans players in FA that there are whom sign for the Lakers because of a lack of money, playing time, or general offers. Money, roster and cap considerations and exigencies prevent players from pooling on a few couple teams. Your suggestion would only lead to more talent consolidation, less parity and a worse league all around.

We have a live-in experiment and example of what happens in professionals sports with no draft: the English Premier league. In England's premier soccer league, the most talented players pool at the top 4 or 5 biggest clubs vying for the spot on a team, even when there are no sports available. These young uber talented professionals would rather wait years and fighting for a spot at Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc than ever "relegate" to the next best teams in the premier league. This is what would happen in OP"s example: less parity, more talent consolidation and a less entertaining league. The draft and the suits random doling out players to the worst clubs first is the best option for fans. Players already get millionaires to bounce a ball; I'm not in favor of giving them the privilege to make the league less competitive.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS A 2ND PLAYOFFS WHERE THE BOTTOM 7 TEAMS OF EACH CONFERENCE HAVE AN ELIMINATION NCAA STYLE PLAYOFFS TO SEE WHO WINS THE 1ST SEED. ELIMINATES TANKING AND MAKES SHIIT MORE INTERESTING FOR THE FANS.

A better way for this is that only the lotto teams can do this, the playoff team pick in order afterwards

Still not a good idea tho

What team do you think Klutch Sports client Ben Simmons would go, under your plan? I know his sister, Emily would get great counsel from her boss Lebron James.

With the disrespect that guys that Barkley, Malone, Webber, Ewing recieves for not having rings, todays players are taught that you're better off riding the championship train to get shine quicker. You think Ben Simmons would pick Phily rather than Cleveland to be LeBron's heir apparent?

I would add that whatever team wins the lottery they can give up to 50-60 mil in bonuses and it wouldnt count against the cap. And from seeds 1-10 the bonus number goes down.
Im not sure a lot of guys will turn down 50 milli guaranteed vs going to la/miami :manny:

It would never work. This is just being in denial of the idea that bad teams exist

superstar talent doesn't sit
young stars would go to small markets to get their clout up and get a big check
nobody gives a fukk about fringe players hugging the bench

like i said survival of the fittest

Yes, yes it does. There are plenty of great players sitting on the benches of historically great soccer teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid. The best teams have their pick of the best young soccer talents ever year, cherry pick those guys, and release the rest. There are great basketball talents whom would rather compete for a spot on their favorite teams over some years than go to Utah. Said talents can always traverse and start at Utah in free agency. OP's suggestion amounts to the rich getting richer, which is what happens in other sports. We have experiments to prove it.
