the Broncos turning into a Super Team his last 3 years is how he got over the hump, I'm glad you said "helped" because too many mf's give Davis too much credit for those rings...

Davis got to run behind FOUR linemen who made a Pro Bowl and/or All-Pro roster in those championship years. He got to run under a trifecta of Shanahan, Kubiak, and Gibbs as his primary offensive coaches...

The Broncos had 5 Pro Bowl defenders in Elway's last 3 years (13 wins, 12 wins, 14 wins). He finally got a Super Team after carrying the franchise on his back for 12 years...

Elway gets so underrated. He walked in the door as yhe greatest QB prospect ever, to a team that won the equivalent of 3.5 games the year prior. And had them in the playoffs for the first time in 4 years...

He went to a franchise that had only went to one Super Bowl in their history before him, and were a punching bag in the AFL, and in his first 9 years brought them more success (3 Super Bowls, 4 AFCCG runs, 10 wins/year, 6 playoff appearances) than they'd ever seen in the 23 years of existence before he got there...

His Super Bowl L's were to generational, historically elite teams ('86 Giants, '87 Redskins, '89 49ers)....these were some of the greatest teams in the entire history of football and remain so until this day. His championship Bronco teams aren't as good as any of those teams but he'd have had a fighting chance if he played those teams with the '97 or '98 Bronco rosters around him...

Instead he had the '86, '87, and '89 Broncos around him vs historically dominant teams...

This board loves Marino, who was losing in the AFC playoffs to teams that couldn't beat the Broncos, but Elway was a "loser" until flash in the pan Davis came along Elway was a winner and an elevator of talent....Marino was just the "talent".

The Super Team helped him get over the hump, Elway was a proven winner before then, way more than guys like Marino who this board loves. Elway routinely leading comebacks in the playoffs, game winning drives, all the shyt...

This dude is underrated...

Typically, a RB who has a dominant year also has dominant OL play ahead of him. Or is considered to. That goes hand in hand, and an OL that blocks for a 2,000 yard rusher and 2x OPOY probably should have multiple Pro Bowl/All Pro players up front.

By this logic, Saquon's 2024 campaign is irrelevant/unimpressive because he ran behind the consensus best OL in the game, even though no back before Saquon put up the numbers he did behind that line.

Typically, yes. Saquon's case is different because nobody else in Philly has approached his production behind thst line. Its widely acknowledged how many backs had career, top of The League years in Denver's system...

Henry is the best back of this era and has never had a line as good as last year's Eagles. So while you're typically correct, there are historic outliers...

Marino beats almost everyone in the "talent" race. Elway was a better player in the clutch, a better elevator of talent, and a real winner, which makes him the better player overall...

Imagine being considered a loser because you cant beat the '86 Giants, '87 Redskins, or '89 49ers while another guy plays one year longer (17 years vs Elway's 16 years), all in the same conference, and gets pleas copped for never carrying teams as far as he did fukking Elway was routinely putting teams on his back against the strongest era in NFC history...

I'm about to create a Marino thread, I swear. Marino played in the same era as Cunningham, Elway, Favre, Kelly, Montana, Young. To most people, Marino wins the "eye test, throw a pretty ball, talent" thing over all of these guys. I'm taking everybody else over Marino except Cunningham and honestly its a close call with Cunningham...

The only difference between Terrell Davis and a guy like Jamaal Charles is that Charles wasn’t fortunate enough to play on a stacked team with a HOF quarterback.

You all scoff at the idea of comparing those two but they each basically had 4 year careers in terms of effectiveness.

As a former Raiders fan i can tell you that offensive line was great. Seemed like they could put anybody back there. Have to admit Charles was fun to watch and looked like the real deal. Of course you can make the same argument for TD. But i dont think as many guys came after him that looked great. Chiefs had like 3 or 4 guys in a row

longevity isnt Davis' strong point, sure. but yall are undermining his gravity in the nfl and effect on the field. He beyond a great running back, he was the best player on the field most games and it was plainly obvious.

(as an example) Like how EVERYONE'S attention on the field stayed with Aaron donald when he was on the field. this comparison is not an exaggeration.

Nah breh, Priest Holmes had back to back 20+ rushing TD seasons. The only other players with multiple 20+ rushing TD's are in the HOF.

EDIT: In 2005 Tatum Bell and Mike Anderson split carries and put up over 2k and 20 TDs.

The Broncos running game didn't blink for almost a decade after TDs injury.

Compare that to other early retirees RBs like Robert Smith or Barry Sanders. Vikings went from SB favorites and one of the best offenses in NFL history to getting their coach fired with Smith retiring and taking their entire running (and passing out of the backfield) game with him.
