Texas Is Home to Largest Black Population In the U.S., Census Data Reveals

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau published last week revealed that Texas is home to the largest Black population in the nation, boasting 3.8 million people as of 2017, according to the Texas Standard.

“This is the first year Texas has been the state with the largest black or African-American population since at least 2010,” Census demographer Molly Cromwell told the news show. “Prior to this year, New York had the largest Black or African-American population back to 2010. The population of Black or African-Americans has been consistently large in Texas for quite some time, however.”

Texas has been among the top three states with the largest Black, or African-American population since 2012, Cromwell noted. Thursday’s data also showed that the Lone Star State saw a significant numeric increase in its Latino population, but not enough to top California, which has the largest Latino population in the entire U.S.

Texas towns and cities that’ve seen the greatest increase in its Black population since 2010 include Prairie View, Desoto, Lancaster and Cedar Hill, just to name a few.

“However, if you look at the percentage of the population that is Black or African American in Texas, it actually ranks 19th among states,” Cromwell added.

The recent data is an indication of America’s growing racial and ethnic diversity in recent years, as the nation’s white population begins to shrink. Last week’s report revealed that for the first time in history, white Americans are dying faster than babies are being born in the majority of U.S. states.

Demographers predict that white Americans will make up less than 50 percent of the U.S. population around the year 2045

These Are The 10 Texas Cities With The Largest Black Population For 2018

The Black community is one of the fastest growing communities in America this decade.

There are now 42 million people who identify as Black or African American living in America, making up 12% of the total population. According to the most recent American Community Survey, the Black population in Texas is 3,134,962 – at 11.6% of the total population of Texas.

The percentage growth of Blacks in America is the third largest percentage change for any race according to the Census’s race and ethnicity definition. As most scholars and historians agree, an increase in the diversity in America is a good thing.

We agree.

But how has the increase impacted Texas? Which cities and towns in Texas have seen the greatest increase in its Black population?

We broke down the most recent census data to determine the cities in Texas with the largest African American population in 2018:

Prairie View took the number one over all spot for the largest Black population in Texas for 2018.

Read on below to see how we crunched the numbers and how your town ranked.

To see where Texas ranked as a state on diversity, we have a ranking of the most diverse states in America.

And if you already knew these places were Black, check out the best places to live in Texas or the most diverse places in Texas.

How We Determined The Cities In Texas With The Largest Black Population For 2018
We still believe in the accuracy of data — especially from the census. So that’s where we went to get the breakdown of race across Texas.

That lead us to the Census’s most recently available data, the 2012-2016 American Community Survey data from the US Census.

Specifically, we looked at table B03002: Hispanic OR LATINO ORIGIN BY RACE. Here are the category names as defined by the Census:

  • Hispanic or Latino
  • White alone*
  • Black or African American alone*
  • American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
  • Asian alone*
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
  • Some other race alone*
  • Two or more races*
* Not Hispanic or latino
Our particular column of interest here was the number of people who identified as Black or African American.

We limited our analysis to non-CDPs with a population greater than 5,000 people. That left us with 329 cities.

We then calculated the percent of residents that are Black or African American. The percentages ranked from 78.0% to 0.0%.

Finally, we ranked each city based on the percent of Black population with a higher score being more Black than a lower score. Prairie View took the distinction of being the most Black, while Mercedes was the least African American city.

Read on for more information on how the cities in Texas ranked by population of African American residents or, for a more general take on diversity in America, head over to our ranking of the most diverse cities in America.

The suburbs
And yet Austin is full of cacs. Blacks dominate just north of the Austin metro with Fort Hood, Temple, Killeen ect.
Yes I was suprised that blacc people were the largest racial group in Killeen, considering its in central Texas where cacs and mexicacs dominant.
