You're speaking in hyperbole

Even going by your logic. You want...

- A place with perfect job opportunities
- A place with 24/7 entertainment
- A place with perfect dating opportunities
- A place with no poor areas
- A place with affordable housing and cost of living

You realize no city in history has ever had those attributes all at once right?

Like I said, ya'll really want to live in Disneyland :russ::russ::russ:

You obviously haven't been to Singapore.

I'm not co-signing "personal responsibility" and "bootstrap". I said his message isn't all the way off base, that part of the message was.

My question is this of which I asked before...

The Texas State government comes out and takes responsibility and says that right now they don't have the capacity to fix the issue immediately but they are working around the clock to get it fixed.

Electricity is still going to be out. What are you going to do?

Trying to find blame for the problem is not going to turn your lights back on.

The next logical step is to find solutions to address your needs.

And then say "what can I do so I'm not in this vulnerable position again?"

Part of the message the mayor was giving was being proactive about the situation. And I agree with that. I don't agree that it is because of laziness or wanting handouts or that the utility companies owe their customers nothing. But I do agree, that as long as someone is in that situation, they need to be proactive, on top of calling to complain or whatever else.

I get it, the bad parts of his message overshadow any good.

But I tell you what, I wouldn't be sitting in any place with icycles dripping from the ceiling hoping and wishing for power to be restored. That puts my livelihood in the hands of others. And I don't play that.

You can always take your money, run to Mexico, and let the little people figure it out.

@DrBanneker What you think about all this? :jbhmm:

I think the individual household should be responsible for four main things:

1. Emergency food (at least 2 weeks; 1 - 2 months minimum is better)
2. Emergency water (bottled or stored; 1 week)
3. Flashlights + batteries (at least a week; folks I know in TX say people are going door to door asking for "spare batteries")
4. Medicine

These can be done in any setup (home, apartment, etc.) and require minimal space if you do it smart. Communications like a ham or CB Radio @Wildin are great too but I honestly doubt most people will.

Beyond that, I would not say anyone is responsible for a generator, etc. unless they are in a high disaster area (gulf coast etc. for hurricanes, Cali for earthquakes) or have frequent power issues on their local grids. You should have something (gas grill, solar oven, tea light candle oven, etc.) to cook though without power. Everything else is superfluous.

I have lived in states were governments plan well for disasters/weather (Upstate NY) and they don't plan at all (ATL). Disaster mitigation and planning as well as a communication strategy is the responsibility of any competent government organization. If they lack that, it is a government failure, passing the buck isn't good and I don't think he just vocalized it wrong, they just got caught with their pants down and are trying to deflect.

That being said--Hurricane Katrina should have taught Black folks we are fools to rely on anyone, even if they are able to help us, so I am kind of hoping people take that away from this but only a few will. COVID should have REALLY taught folks to not be on bullshyt.

This is only going to get worse since towns, cities, and states can't easily issue debt like the Feds so lacking more federal money, the cuts and shoestring budgets are going to get critical. Even if they have the money, what side of the tracks do you think will get help first?

So @boy I won't go as far as blame anyone in TX but I will say unfortunately we gotta deal with reality or reality with deal with us.

I have emergency food/water threads on here if you search my postings.

EDIT: you did quote my posts :gladbron:

The Keystone State
Can we also remind TX gov officials this weather event is NOT a blizzard......

It was just a basic ass snow storm, and they need to fix shyt before it happens again.

A lot of people are mad at this guy, but he's pretty much telling you straight up what these 'leaders' really think of you. When things really start breaking down, they will NOT be there for you, and that includes white daddy dressed in blue. Those republicans and democrat politicians are going to be saving their OWN butts or enjoying a leisurely living standard because they've already stocked up and prepared. Did you think those seed vaults, underground cities and the such were for no reason? You better start stocking up and locking your network in and getting your salvation right. A lot of people want to use this to score points for their political party who doesn't care an iota about you... keep gloating and think this won't come to your area. This is really just the beginning. A lot more areas are going to get touched this year and in the upcoming years, and you better take YOUR survival seriously and stop deferring it and putting it into the hands of professional liars.
