That part here stuck out to me most. Especially hearing some of the cats in here who thought dude was really out to rob him and lied about Benji coming at dude. His brother basically sounded as if he believed the shooter's account based on what he taught Benji.

This story made me really look back on city life. Being the "crowned prince" or known cat around the way getting the athletes pass can create this no one can hurt me persona that, at age 17, can get to a niqqas head. That "nah...nah...leave shorty alone. That niqqa is nice" shyt thrown by thugs who protect the chosen athletes in the hood is real. My last summer before going to OU was surreal the way niqqas were just so protective and proud of a niqqa. But Benji was different. He had that from 10th grade on and no one was around to temper not letting it get to his head. His bro took responsibility for that. Either way, there's just some niqqas who don't know "the backdown."
It's funny on that NBA roundtable show Kenny Smith and Steve Smith were describing this situation and Barkely coming from Alabama had no idea what they were talking about... Smitty was talking about growing up in Detroit in the 80's and the hustlers buying him sneakers and making sure nobody messed with him.. That's mos def something that happens when you're a star and looked at as a way out for so many people...

That's why part of me feels kinda sorry for D. Rose...Becoming a millionaire in the same city where everyone was rooting for you to make it and probably feeling he owes them somethings.. Especially with Chicago being the most segregated city in the country..He probably feels like he's in hell sometimes.. I hear his brothers did a good job at building a wall around him though..

His brother seems to believe them. He said he taught Benji not to back down.

true...but look at it from the other side bro, young gang member in my city during the 80's with a gun? plus women around. i believe the shooter story to a certain point, any little thing could have led to dude getting shot at that point imo

Nobody in their right mInd would attack If they saw the gun

I guess what I wrote prior to this is foreign to you, so I'll post it again.

Don't compare regular niqqas to this. When the hood protects you because you're an athlete, you probably think no one can do shyt to you.

This was an excellent documentary but it did have some plot holes in his actual killing. But at the end of the day a 17 year old future star was killed and two young men basically had their lives destroyed from one moment of ignorance. The killers story sounds plausible but the truth is no one but him Benji and the other guy truly knows what happened that day.

I have been both looking forward to and dreading watching this doc since I heard it was announced...

I remember reading that Scoop Jackson story in Slam when I was a kid like 5 times, hearing rappers like Common talk about the situation on his albums and listening to all the urban legend stories from older Chicago n!ggas...

It was always a discouraging story to me, but nothing could prepare me to the impact of this movie...

First.. After hearing so much about him over the years and seeing pics it felt surrreal to actually see him alive, hooping, smiling and talking (that Chi accent was so strong)..It was like watching a ghost...I've heard his game described in such grandious terms, his actual skill level was actually a bit of a let down...I can see he was gonna be great, but he was always descibed to me as a Magic/Jordan hybrid with range like Larry..Not sure about that but he could definately go...He would have been a star.. Especially with his looks and charisma...Him and Len could have totally changed the balance of the league in the late 80's...

The film just had so much sorrow and dispair.. You can tell a lot of the reaction was fueled by folks realizing that it wasn't just over for Benji, it was a wrap for them..They had their future tied to his success so much he was looked at as a meal ticket out for them.. Some of his boys even said as much... His mother's strength and dignity actually bothered me a lot.. For some reason it was really uncomfortable.. Maybe because a part of me knows I could never be that strong...The open casket was too much for ESPN imo..Even though it's been almost 30 years I could have done without that..So morbid..

The crazy part is that he died a couple of weeks into Jordan's rookie year.. He never even got to see what was about to happen to his city in the near future..

His reaction to the P-Stones wildin out at the Farraguat game (ironic they have the same colors as Simeon) was actually a little bit of comic relief and a cool lil window into his character and personality..

That part about his brother saying "he was just trying to be like me" really hit home to me..Thinking about all the advice I have given younger family members about "never backing down or punking out"..

Just damn...Nothing more to say....

Man I thought I was the only one. I may get some heat for this but at first, the way she was acting came off a lilttle contrived to me but maybe its just me.

Don't know what or how she was doing behind closed doors. Some people can put on a good face for the crowd.

This aint no diss or nothing, I just don't know to many people built like that.

Its actually pretty common in the Black community even though I can't relate to it or comprehend... A 17 year old kid that lived in my neighborhood was murdered right in front of my mailbox by some kids from a rival high school.. Two days later his mom was at the high school dry eyed giving the students a speech about violence and peer pressure..

I think Black mothers with sons realize we are on burrowed time and mentally prepare themselves for the worst from the moment we are born... Its fukked up but I believe it to be true...

They are quite resilient.

That's why I'm so hard on the younger ones. If they realized the cloth they were cut from, I believe they would have a lot more pride and we would see less ratchetness
