2000-2007 = mixtapes. Mostly rapping over other people’s beats. Wayne ended up having unofficial mixtapes with all leaked records that we started to consider albums.

Kid Cudi dropped A Kid Named Cudi in 2008. It’s like 50% original material, 50% borrowed beats and it has Day N Nite the hit record on it. 2009 So Far Gone is 70% new material and has multiple hits on it. Same time period Wiz and Spitta dropping 90% original mixtapes.

Now that samples are a little less popular and streaming is everything. You might as well make every mixtape a EP ala Young Thug.

Drama getting busted was a turning point too. The DJ hosted mixtape became less prominent and the internet became more important.

Drake did NOT start the mixtape album trend. Everyone posted up did it prior. Cudi IIRC was the first to have a massive hit on his mixtape/album.

Cudi had the IN with GOOD Via Plain Pat though. Charles Hamilton Brooklyn Girls made so much noise. The Cool Kids Pager joint too.

your stars are but dust on my shoes
damn this thread is actually really interesting and puts things into perspective. The mixtape era was full of so many dope projects spanning so many regions and sounds. We might really look back on that era and say it was one of the best.:ohhh:

I wouldn't even be mad either. Just so much music.

I like them gritty early/mid 2000 joints that non-internet geeks had to pay $5 for (or 3 for $10). Dipset, D-Block, G-Unit, Squad Up, Trap Or Die, Cassidy, Fabolous, etc.

The whole album as a mixtape thing is aiight, but just doesn't seem as "street".

:yeshrug: I don't listen to any mixtapes from the early 2000s no more honestly. I just don't care for nikkaz rapping over others beats

nikka those are 2 different mixtape eras. And some of the folk on the tail end really different from their predecessors.

I'd say for me the GOAT mixtape era ended in 2013.

That's when some of the older guys started phasing out, a lot of new guys came in immediately after except they didn't have anywhere near the longevity.

2000–2006 and 2007–2013 two of the GOAT mixtape eras.

I miss the DJ drops. I ain't talking about those garbage Datpiff tags that take you out of the song, but actual DJ tags. Sure you had the shyt DJs who ruined songs (DJ Drama), but you also had guys who had their timing right and flowed with the track (DJ Holiday, Evil Empire).

That recent Dave East "Karma" tape (Hosted by DJ Holiday) really took me back to a few years ago. The shyt from the last few years starting to feel too 'refined'...lacks the street feel.

2013 was the worst year in rap all time, so how sway, how.
