I dont think there is one. At best, you can say the best of a type of anime. Theres too many for me to choose. I think DBZ is the best of the type of anime it is, best classic action shonen. If I had to choose a single best all around it would probably be Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I think that is the best anime of all time but it isnt my favorite.

Wasnt really a different direction, he actually intended on ending it with Frieza Saga but was pressed by publishers to continue. The backlash youre talking about is when he intended on making Gohan the main hero during the Perfect Cell Saga and nikkas wasnt having it. Thats why the Buu Saga was all over the place because he had to change what he intended to do.

Even before that he's planned on ending the series multiple times but continued due to it popularity. I'm talking OG dragon ball he was gonna end it after the defeated pilaf and got the dragonballs then after the 23rd tenkaichi budokai.
Fans just need to accept he makes this shyt up as he goes along and his story telling for the buu arc was just not good. A bunch of cool ass concepts I'll admit but the story was not great. Dragon ball was never meant to be this super serious well planned out show but that's entirely what makes it so enjoyable. All the stuff is over the top.
It's not and never was planned to be super serious and coherent like death note or full metal alchemist.

Buu arc was him going back to his roots. There was a lot more comedy there, and the villain was magic based instead of some alien. Dragon ball was originally meant to be funny and play around with characters from mythology but he decided to change gears to Sci fi parody.

I actually enjoyed the fukkery of the last storyline. He was in his bag with the fukkery.
