I stated a known fact. Fielding percentage is bad to use but I'm not on my tablet so I don't feel like looking up sabermetrics on my phone ... although last year they prove what I'm saying. But he has improved this year. Not denying that. It's just that he isn't as good as advertised.

I agree he's probably not as good as advertised if he's being sold as an elite defender.

He's an example of why I don't really like using single-season defensive metrics though. In his 4 full seasons he's been bad/good/bad/good......and I'm not sure I believe defensive performance can fluctuate that wildly (baring injuries). It's why I hedge and say he's at worst an average defender.



But fielding percentage is a truly awful way to evaluate individual defense. Especially an outfielder.

How does what they did last year matter to what they're doing this year? It's a 1-year award based on his value in relation to the rest of the league THIS year. Last year, there were several players more valuable imo. This season you can't convince me anyone has been better.

Goldschmidt has been much better than this dude and he's been doing it since April. CarGo has been better than McCutchen.

Goldy's wOBA and wRC+ are higher than his and McCutchen has a higher WAR because of his defense/base running.

Bob Nutting has a rep for being a cheap owner, but all the teams passed on him due to the $3 Million he is owed this season. Hopefully, Pirates management realizes that Morneau acquisition may be the difference between a Division championship or playing in the Wild card game

C'mon son. That's how you would vote if you had your way but that's not how MVPs get picked. And Goldy is a top defensive 1B and no slouch on the bases
