how good are the mariners now? Can they actually rally for the last Wildcard??
If Jackson gets on a hot streak, they definitely have a chance. Offense is their weakness and they didn't give up anything of significance from their roster.

We know he's prone to extreme cold streaks too though. :ld:

No matter what, with Felix and Iwakuma pitching the way they have this season, they'll be in the hunt down the stretch.

then that's the way the cookie crumbles... btw i dont think anyone with any rational thought expects lester to stay in oakland.

i am 100% cool with this decision... in fact i commend this n*gga for trying when a lot of other GM's are too shook to do ANYTHING ie Amaro and Alderson etc.

playoffs are a crapshoot they will always be a crapshoot no changing that. but i definitely appreciate the front offcie taking a shot... when is a chance like this gonna come up again for a small market team like the a's? gotta at least try
Fair enough bruh.

yeah man... it is what it is... the A's problems are so deep until they get a new stadium they really can't start spending serious coin to keep some of these players and who knows when that happens?

i'd love nothing more for our pockets to be as deep as the Angels, Dodgers, Sox and Yankees... but that sh*t prolly won't happen in my lifetime lol

Yea i just found it crazy that they would trade away one of they better power bats & defensive outfielders. But i guess Beane is tried of not having the World Series. Just asked that question because if they dont win it & Lester does leave. Will they regret it long term of letting go of Yoenis. But like you send they dont have the money. Are they going to throw big $$ at Donaldson or trade him when that time comes?

Our pockets aint deep anymore. Because Dipshyt & Arte Moreno spent stupidly.

regrets... lol that's tough man... i guess as a GM you can't look at the game like that.. he made the best decision he thought was possible to get his team into the playoffs and maybe further... it's tough man.. like gambling or playing the stock market.. there will always be regrets.. but which would you rather have... regrets or "shoulda, coulda, woulda"?

donaldson is gone man... all these young players will dip or be traded once they've maxed out their perceived value... this is the game for small market teams... again it is what it is

yeah i think dipoto is forced alot of times by moreno... it almost has that feeling like dipoto knows better but he's forced to go with the owners decision to keep his job... the amount of money they put up for hamilton and pujols is crazy man

A little better than before.....but still not good enough.

FWIW, BaseballProspectus has their playoff odds at 18%.

The Jays not making any moves helps, but Jackson isn't good enough to make a big enough difference.

Than it's business as usual for beane

People forget the As won 102 and 103 games in 2001 and 2002 with nothing to show for it with the same tactics

What "tactics"?

There was nothing about those 100+ win teams that made them predisposed to playoff failures.

yoenis could have opted out this year no? a's werent keeping him

no, straight forward 4 year deal

as for Donaldson, because of his late bloomer status hes actually under team control until 2018. now its believed they'll throw him a bone soon, but nowhere close to what he'd get on the open market

the Mariners are still the Cano and Seager show at the plate, theres really no one else (Morales i guess) that can hurt you. they have some flat out bad players that cant hit and dont really get on base, still think they are a year or so away. but yea Felix in a 1 game playoff? id never count them out, Chris Young is fluky but Felix and Iwakuma are very deadly in a short series

favorite quote from the day... from grantland:

In one of the most shocking blockbusters in MLB trade deadline history, the Oakland A’s sent All-Star Yoenis Cespedes and a competitive balance pick to the Boston Red Sox for Cy Young contender Jon Lester, former Athletic Jonny Gomes, less than $1 million, and a gold-plated protective case for Billy Beane’s giant balls.
