The yankees you can understand paying that money because they are the Yankees and whats money. But the Marlins, if true, offering up 80 mil for a closer just doesn't make sense to me. The way bullpen arms come and go, I don't know if I could invest heavily in someone who is supposed to pitch one inning at a time
It woulda made more sense if JF16 was around :mjcry:

Bullpen arms are arguably why the Giants lost in the first round and the Cubs went on to win the World Series. :yeshrug:

these Chapman/Jensen contracts are gonna set the White Sox up nicely to deal Drob & Nate Jones

Jones is so cheap and has 4 years left with last two club options

Haven't been reading many Coli threads lately but this  smiley has me dead lmao.

As a White Sox fan, I hated to see Chris Sale traded. Good haul, I guess. Loved Adam Eaton, too. Nats got a good player. Might be the one who gets them over the hump (get some relief pitching too though! kenley??? Overpay for him if you're going all or nothing the next two years!) But man I love what ChiSox got back for Eaton.

Four of the top 40 prospects in MLB, plus Carson Fulmer and Tim Anderson ... and hopefully Rodon and Quintana.

Team gonna suck for two years probably but then we gonna be damn good :ehh:

This has to be some kind of conspiracy against Chapman.

Look, I don't think that contract is smart. But who gives a shyt? This is the Yankees with money to burn.
I was calling out how terrible the Tex contract was. How bad the Sabathia contract was. And while I'm at it...CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW BAD THE ELLSBURY CONTRACT IS????

Why the fukk is this now an issue with Chapman?

Let's get a little refresher here. In the last 4 seasons the Yankees have paid Mark Teixeira $91,250,000....for 365 games (91 a year) and a slash line of .222/.319/.431.
And I'm supposed to be pissed off about Aroldis fukkin Chapman? A guy who the Yankees can easily trade off in 3 or 4 years and eat the majority of that 18M he's gonna make a year?

:what:

This is the contract that fukkin ESPN is up in arms about?
Not the 184M that the Cubs are paying Jason fukkin Heyward?
Not the 180M the Red Sox still owe David Price? And yes, Price can opt out next fall but who the fukk is going to pay David Price more money than he's already got at 31 years old?
Not the 161M the Orioles gave Chris Davis? A glorified DH they're trying to hide at 1B who just hit .221??

You know how many terrible deals there are in MLB and we're supposed to act like 18M a year to a dominant Chapman from the richest team in baseball is something they're going to regret?

Paying 86 million for a closer when your team doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning or competing for a world series makes no sense

Except this isn't the Kansas City Royals and money is relative.

The Giants signed a 31 year old Mark Melancon for 62M
For NY with way more money than the Giants to sign a 28 year old much-more-dominant Chapman for 86M isn't far fetched.

*edit, Giants signed Melancon. My mistake. @god shamgod

Giants signed melancon and they are contenders who had a glaring weakness with their bullpen, it cost them a playoff game.

Yankees had miller, betances and chapman and were in 3rd/4th place so paying 86 million made no sense for a closer when they arent legit contenders shoulda traded for sale or sonny gray something they actually need

By the time the yankees are contenders in a few years and chapmans velocity drops he's gonna be food.

You're right. My bad. Not sure what I was looking at. It was the Giants.

Chapman going from 101 MPH to 95 in a few years won't mean anything.
Hell Melancon is getting batters out throwing 89.

Melancon throws cutters, sinkers, curves :manny: chapman throws straight heat 95% of the time ,the ball rajai davis hit was a 97 mph fastball :mjpls:

you act like connor gillepsie, buster posey and adrian gonzalez weren't knockin those 100+ pitches around in the playoffs. If the giants, nationals or dodgers signed chapman no one would care about the dough because they all need closers and are contenders.Everybody knew he was gonna get paid the most for any closer

Yeah that was a good smack by Davis. :ehh:

Even so, the vast majority of the time Chapman has been, and will be successful.
I'm not saying they're the same (they're clearly not), but in the long run Davis' HR off Chapman will matter about as much as Alomar's HR off Rivera.

:coffee:

Unless Chapman mentally implodes like Brad Lidge after Pujols took his soul
:damn::damn::damn::damn::damn:

But Lidge helped the Phillies win the WS a couple years later
